Faulty Signal

Faulty signal. Permanent fault

Checking the signal

- Ignition off
- Check the control module for the steering wheel angle sensor and the steering wheel module (SWM) connectors. Check for contact resistance and oxidation according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault
- Ignition on
- Read off the status of steering wheel angle signals A, B, IX and IY
- Carefully turn the steering wheel to the limit positions in both directions and check that the value changes between ON and OFF.
If the value changes between OFF and ON, the cause of the fault was contact resistance or oxidation in the control module or in the steering wheel angle sensor connector.

Other information:
- To disconnect the control module for the steering wheel angle sensor, see Steering wheel module (SWM), replacing Service and Repair
- To disconnect the steering wheel module (SWM), see Steering wheel module (SWM), replacing Service and Repair
- For information about signals for the control module for the steering wheel angle sensor, see Signal description, Control unit for the steering wheel angle sensor (SAS) Signal Specification
- For information about signals to the steering wheel module (SWM), see Signal specification Signal Specification, Steering Wheel Module (SWM).

Do the values change between OFF and ON?

Yes - Fault Found

No - Checking wiring and sensors

Checking wiring and sensors

- Ignition off
- The control module for the steering wheel angle sensor disconnected
- Steering wheel module (SWM) disconnected
- Connect the breakout box to the control module for the steering wheel angle sensor and to the steering wheel module (SWM)
Check the wiring between the control module for the steering wheel angle sensor
terminal #3 (terminal (#A27) and steering wheel module (SWM) terminal #5 (terminal #A5)
terminal #4 (terminal (#A28) and steering wheel module (SWM) terminal #3 (terminal #A3)
terminal #10 (terminal (#A34) and steering wheel module (SWM) terminal #2 (terminal #A2)
#11 (#A35) and steering wheel module (SWM) #17 (#A17)
check for a short-circuit to each other. Check for open-circuits according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault. Check for a short-circuit to ground according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault. Check for a short-circuit to supply voltage according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.
Try replacing the steering wheel angle sensor if no faults are found in the wiring between the control module for the steering wheel angle sensor and the steering wheel module (SWM).

Hint: After the repair it is necessary to check that the fault has been rectified.

- Ignition off.
- Connect the connectors, install the components, etc.
- Ignition on.
- Turn the steering wheel slowly to full lock in both directions.
The values should alternate between OFF and ON.
