Preparations
Ignition off.
Wait three minutes.
Disconnect the battery negative lead.
Removing steering wheel module
Warning! The battery must not be connected when the steering wheel module is being removed or installed.
Switch the ignition to positionIso that the steering wheel lock is disengaged.
Adjust the steering column to a comfortable working position for good access.
Slacken off the 2 screws in the countersunk holes on the reverse of the steering wheel.
The screws must not be removed, but remain in the counter sunk holes in the steering wheel. Turn the steering wheel (90° in both directions) to access the screws.
Carefully lift out the steering wheel module. Disconnect the connector from reverse of the module.
Remove the module.
Warning! The steering wheel module must never be taken apart, repaired or moved to another vehicle.Follow the instructions in section F on handling a replaced steering wheel module.
Warning! Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected, non-deployed airbag module. This could deploy the airbag!
Caution! When temporarily removing a non-deployed steering wheel module (when replacing the steering wheel or contact reel for example), the module must be placed with its metal side (rear) downwards somewhere safe (in the cargo compartment for example).
Removing the center screw from the steering wheel
Slacken off but do not remove the center screw for the steering wheel
Slacken off the center screw in the steering wheel, butdo not remove it!
It should be possible to unscrew the screw by hand in the next operation.
Locking the contact reel
The steering wheel must be positioned so that the wheels are pointing straight ahead.
Remove the locking screw from the parking hole in the steering wheel. Install it in the cut-out in the contact reel.
Caution! Do not turn the steering wheel when the contact reel is locked as the contact reel pin will shear off.
Marking the position of the steering wheel
Apply masking tape to the steering wheel cover and steering wheel to obtain the straight ahead position for the steering wheel.
Draw a line on both pieces of tape (as a reference to each other).
Caution! The front wheels of the car must not now be touched or affected in any way that would cause them to move out of position.
Removing the steering wheel
Lift out the steering wheel without turning it.
Thread the wiring through the hole in the steering wheel.
Removing steering column covers
Remove the 3 screws from the countersunk holes in the cover.
Then bend the upper cover up, followed by the lower cover from the ignition switch.
Removing the contact reel and steering wheel angle sensor
Disconnect the left connector. Pull the connector backwards and upwards from the mounting.
Remove the 4 screws.
Remove the contact reel. Lift it out carefully.
Resetting the contact reel and steering wheel angle sensor (Only to be carried out when the default position has been changed)
Remove the screw from the lock position for the contact reel.
Turn the contact reel as far as possible to the left.
First turn the contact reel two full turns to the right.
Then continue to turn in the same direction approximately three quarters of a turn to the screw hole.
The screw hole must be positioned in the upper lock position as illustrated.
Install the screw in the contact reel lock position.
The contact reel is now reset and locked (secured).
Checking the locking screw
Check that the locking screw is in the new contact reel as illustrated.
If the locking screw is not in the lock position, the contact reel must be reset. To reset see Resetting the contact reel and steering wheel angle sensor (Only to be carried out when the default position has been changed)
Note! A new contact reel is zeroed at the factory and supplied with the locking screw installed. "Zeroed" means that the steering wheel can be turned to full lock in either direction without damaging the contact reel
Installation
Installing the contact reel and steering wheel angle sensor
Install the contact reel on the lever housing.
Tighten the 4 screws. Tighten to 2.5 Nm.
Press the left connector into place in the mounting.
Connect the connectors.
Installing steering column covers
Install the upper and lower covers on the steering column
Install the 3 screws in the countersunk holes in the lower cover.
Align the locating pins in the guide holes in the cover.
Installing the steering wheel
Feed the wiring through the upper hole on the steering wheel.
Install the steering wheel straight without turning it. Ensure that the markings on the tape on the steering wheel and cover correspond.
Caution! During installation, the steering wheel must be in the correct position in relation to the alignment of the wheels. Both the locating pins for the contact reel must be correctly positioned in the cut-outs in the steering wheel.
Installing center screw
Caution! Do not use a tool. Finger tighten the screw. The steering wheel must never be turned while the contact reel is locked.
Install the screw in the center of the steering wheel.
Unlocking the contact reel
Remove the screw from the locking position in the contact reel.
Install the screw in the parking hole in the steering wheel.
The contact reel is now unlocked (unsecured) and the steering wheel can be turned.
Tightening center screw
When the steering wheel is straight.
Tighten the screw in the center of the steering wheel. Tighten to 40 Nm.
Remove the tape markings on the cover and steering wheel.
Installing airbag steering wheel module
Warning! The battery must not be connected when the steering wheel module is being removed or installed.
Switch the ignition to positionIso that the steering wheel lock is disengaged.
Position the lower section of the steering wheel module against the steering wheel. Connect the SRS ignition cable, igniter and connector to the module.
Fold the module into the steering wheel. Check that the SRS ignition cable is not trapped.
Screw the module in place from behind. The two screws are in the countersunk holes in the steering wheel. Turn the steering wheel to gain access to the screws. Tighten to 10 Nm.
Caution! Tighten the right-hand screw first. This is important for the operation of the signal horn.
Final check
Warning! Ensure that no one is inside the car when the battery is connected.
When all components have been reinstalled
