Preparation
Remove
- the wheel.
- the ABS sensor.
Disconnect the ABS-sensor's cable from the spring strut.
Remove the brake caliper's both attaching screws.
Hang up the brake caliper, suitably in the spring strut.
Note! Make sure that the brake hose is not damaged during the work.
Remove the screw that holds the drive shaft. Counterhold the brake disc with a screwdriver.
Remove
- the brake disc's guide pin.
- the brake disc.
Tap in the drive shaft end in the hub approx. 10-15 mm. Use a brass drift.
Remove the anti-roll bar's upper link from the spring strut.
Remove the steering joint from the wheel spindle. Use Puller 999 5259 SEPARATOR 999 5259 Separator.
Blow clean with compressed air around the ball joint.
Spray liberally with rust solvent on the ball joint as well as on the screw and nut that hold the ball joint.
If the screw is rusted on, loosen the nut a few revolutions and tap loose the screw.
Remove the nut and screw.
Spray again with rust solvent on the ball joint.
Note! Do not drive in any chisel or drift between the "ears" on the wheel spindle.
Tap loose the ball joint from the wheel spindle.
Use a sleeve as a spacer.
Note! The sleeve's inside diameter must be larger than the cap's outside diameter, so that the cap is not damaged.
Spray again with rust solvent on the ball joint.
Move the ball joint up and down by hand (or with a pry bar) until the ball joint comes off the wheel spindle.
Install the protective sleeve 999 5562 PROTECTIVE SOCKET 999 5562 Protective Socket on the ball joint.
Fixate the link arm in depressed position with tool 999 5563 SUPPORT 999 5563 Support.
Remove the drive shaft from the hub.
Turn the spring strut half a turn and "lock" it by placing the guide arm on the link arm.
Note! Be careful so that the brake hose is not damaged.
Hang up the drive shaft in the spring strut.
Replacing front wheel bearing/hub
Remove the wheel bearing unit.
Check the wheel spindle's contact faces against the wheel bearing unit.
Also check the bolt heads' contact faces on the wheel spindle.
Lubricate all contact faces with a little oil.
Install the wheel bearing unit with new screws .
Lubricate the screws' outermost threads with a little oil and tighten crosswise with 65 Nm .
Angle-torque the wheel bearing unit's screws crosswise with 60° . Use angle gauge 951 2050 BEVEL PROTRACTOR 951 2050 Bevel Protractor.
Finishing
Check the drive shaft for damage on the contact faces against the wheel bearing.
Check the booms (splines).
Clean and check the toothed wheel with regards to the shape of the teeth.
Lubricate the booms (splines) and the contact faces against the wheel bearing with a little oil.
Loosen the drive shaft from the earlier suspension.
Turn the spring strut half a turn to loosen it from the link arm.
Note! Be careful so that the brake hose is not damaged.
Install the drive shaft in the hub by hand, but just so much that the drive shaft can be moved easily back and forth in its position.
Lubricate a new drive shaft screw with oil and screw it in a few turns by hand.
Clean the ball joint and the wheel spindle from rust.
Lubricate the ball joint stop and the wheel spindle.
Install the ball joint in the wheel spindle
Note! Press the ball joint upwards so that the conical top is visible above the screwed joint on the stub axle.
Install the screw and a new nut.
Tighten to 50 Nm .
Check the dust cap for the anti-roll bar's link for damage.
Check the link's threads for damage.
Lubricate the threads with oil.
Install the anti-roll bar's upper link on the spring strut. Use new lock nut . Tighten with 50 Nm .
Install the tie rod on the wheel spindle. Use new lock nut . Tighten with 70 Nm .
Check that the brake disc's contact faces against the wheel bearing unit are smooth and flat.
Install
- the brake disc.
- the brake disc's guide pin. Tighten with 8 Nm .
Check the brake caliper's and the wheel spindle's contact faces.
Clean and grease the stroke limiter's surfaces.
Install the brake caliper. Use new screws . Tighten with 100 Nm .
Tighten the drive shaft's center screw. Counterhold with a screwdriver in the brake disc.
Clean and check the ABS-sensor's contact face on the wheel spindle for flatness.
Coat the contact face very sparingly with grease.
Install the ABS-sensor's cable in the holder on the spring strut.
Install the ABS-sensor. Lubricate the screw with oil and tighten with 10 Nm .
