Gear selector cables, replacing

Special tools:
999 7077 Jimmy bar 999 7077 Jimmy Bar

Removal

Removing the air cleaner (ACL) housing




Remove the air cleaner housing ACL assembly with the intake pipe. Pull the air cleaner (ACL) housing out of its mountings.
Remove the left front wheel.

Removing the center console

V70R (B5254T4 engine)
Remove the center console.

V70 (other engines)
Remove the center console. See (-2004) or (2005-).

V70XC/XC70
Remove the center console. See (-2004) or (2005-).

S80
Remove the center console.

Remove the gear selector cables from the bracket and from the lever on the transmission




Use special tool 999 7077 Jimmy bar 999 7077 Jimmy Bar to remove the cable from the lever.
Detach the cable sleeve from the bracket.

Removing mechanical cable from gear selector assembly




Move the gear selector to P.

Remove:
- the catch for the cable on the gear selector
- the cable from the gear selector assembly. Use a screwdriver
- the cable.

Removing the cable at the firewall





Remove:
- the two nuts for the transmission cable grommet at the firewall
- the mechanical cable by pulling it inwards into the passenger compartment.

Hint: Route the mechanical cable correctly in the engine compartment with someone to assist you.

Installation

Preparations for installation




Bend a heavy welding rod (wire).

Note! When installing the mechanical cable: Make sure that there are no sharp bends or kinks, especially in the cable's ends between the inner cable and outer casing.

Installing the mechanical cable




Install the cable under the heater unit on left-hand side, down towards the hole.

Note! Be extremely careful when running the rubber bellow for the cable through the hole in the firewall. The cable must not be damaged.

Feed a small amount of cable through the hole.

Hint: Ask a colleague to hook the end of the cable onto the welding rod (wire).

Locate the grommet on the studs
Install the nuts. Tighten to 12 Nm .




Pull the welding rod (wire) while feeding the cable in from the inside.
The cable must be routed past the steering gear and up to the transmission bracket.




Position the cable behind the steering gear and over the hydraulic pipes.

Installing mechanical cable for gear selector assembly





Install:
- the cable sleeve to the gear selector assembly
- the cable to the gear selector and the catch.

Installing the service clips





Note! The automatic transmission has one gear selector cable while the manual transmission has two cables.

Ensure that the gear selector cable is locked in position before installing the blue clip. Press the clip into place as illustrated.




Check that the clip is positioned in the groove as illustrated.

Installing the center console

V70R (B5254T4 engine)
Install the center console.

V70 (other engines)
Install the center console. See (-2004) or (2005-).

V70XC/XC70
Install the center console. See (-2004) or (2005-).

S80
Install the center console.

Installing the gear selector cable on the transmission




Move the gear selector to position P.
Turn the lever on the transmission to position P (the foremost position).
Check that P position is engaged: Try to roll the car.
Detach the lock tab on the cable. Pull it straight up slightly. Use flat nosed pliers.
Install the cable in the bracket and on the lever on the transmission. Fold the locking down.
Press the locking tab into place on the cable.

Checking the shift positions

Installing the service clips





Note! The automatic transmission has one gear selector cable while the manual transmission has two cables.

Ensure that the gear selector cable is locked in position before installing the blue clip. Press the clip into place as illustrated.




Check that the clip is positioned in the groove as illustrated.

Installing the air cleaner (ACL) housing
Install the air cleaner (ACL) housing, including all hoses and electrical terminals.

Installing the front wheels
Install the front wheel.
