Ignition off. Disconnect battery negative lead

Check that the customer has left the radio code.

Warning! Before assembling the steering wheel the ignition should be in position II. Then the battery negative should be reconnected. See Conclusion. Ensure that nobody is in the car when the battery is being connected.

Removing steering wheel screws

Leave the screws on the reverse of the steering wheel in their countersunk holes.
2 Torx 30 screws.

Removing steering wheel module

Warning! The battery must not be connected when the SRS ignition cable connector is removed or installed.

Warning! Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected, non-deployed airbag module. This could deploy the airbag.

Warning! The steering wheel module must never be taken apart, repaired or moved to another vehicle. For handling replaced module, see Handling replaced SRS airbags/seat belt tensioners Handling Replaced SRS Airbags/Seat Belt Tensioners.

Placing the steering wheel module

Caution! If a non-deployed steering wheel module is removed temporarily, it should be placed with the metal side (rear) downwards in a protected place.

Connecting special tool

Connect special tool 998 8695 TEST DEVICE 998 8695 Test Device
If the ignition is switched on when neither the steering wheel module nor special tool are connected, a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will be stored indicating an open-circuit. Any diagnostic trouble code (DTC) must be erased.

Slacken off center screw

Slacken off the screw but leave it in place. The screw should be loose enough to unscrew by hand.

Reconnect the battery negative lead

Align front wheels

- Drive the car straight forwards or backwards on a level surface so that the wheels point straight ahead.

Caution! It is always important to point the wheels straight ahead when carrying out work that requires the removal of the steering wheel and/or contact reel.

Warning! Do not drive the car further than necessary to align the front wheels. The steering wheel is not properly tightened and the steering wheel module has been removed.

To remove and install contact reel, see Lighting, instrumentation and other electrical equipment, S70/V70.

Assembling

Zeroing contact reel

If the locking screw is not in the lock position as illustrated, the contact reel must be zeroed. For zeroing see Resetting SRS contact reel Reset Procedure.

Note! A new contact reel is zeroed at the factory and supplied with the locking screw installed. Zeroed means that the steering wheel can be turned to full lock in either direction without damaging the contact reel.

Install switches, steering wheel covers and steering wheel

2 Torx 20 screws in the switches.
3 Torx 20 screws in the steering wheel covers.

Caution! Do not turn the steering wheel when the contact reel is locked as the contact reel pin will break off.

Caution! The steering wheel must be installed in the correct position in relation to front wheel alignment.

If the steering wheel was not installed straight, it must not be turned on the steering column. Carefully remove the steering wheel and try again.

Install center screw

Caution! Finger tighten the screw. Do not use a tool.

Unlocking the contact reel

Remove screw from lock position (B) and install it in the parking position (A). Do not detach the screw from the plastic strip.

The contact reel is now unlocked (unsecured) and the steering wheel can be turned.

Connect special tool 998 8695 TEST DEVICE 998 8695 Test Device.

Reconnect the battery negative lead

Align front wheels

Drive the car straight forwards or backwards on a level surface so that the wheels point straight ahead.
Carefully turn the steering wheel and check that it can be turned to full lock in each direction.

Warning! Do not drive the car further than necessary to align the front wheels. The steering wheel is not properly tightened and the steering wheel module has been removed.

If the steering wheel is not straight:
Start again from removing the steering wheel and aligning the wheels.

SRS Airbag date decal

Location Of Components - Warning and Information Decals Inside the Car (On B Pillar):

Note! Do not forget to replace the steering wheel module decal on the driver's side B-post with a new decal.

The date decal is supplied with the new passenger airbag module.
