Special tools:
998 8695 TEST DEVICE 998 8695 Test Device

Preparations

- make a note of the anti-theft radio code.
- ignition off.
- disconnect the battery negative lead.

Warning! During assembly, the ignition must be in position II. Then reconnect the battery negative lead, according to Conclusion. Ensure that nobody is in the car when the battery is being connected.

Ignition in position I

Warning! The battery must not be connected when the SRS ignition cable connector is being removed or installed.

Ignition switch to position I so that the steering wheel lock is disengaged.

Slacken off steering wheel screws

Slacken off the two screws (Torx 30) on the reverse of the steering wheel. The screws must not be removed, but remain in the counter sunk holes in the steering wheel. Turn the steering wheel to access the screws.

Removing airbag steering wheel module

Disconnect the connector and lift off the steering wheel module.

Warning! Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected, non-deployed airbag module. This could deploy the airbag!

Warning! The steering wheel module must never be taken apart, repaired or moved to another vehicle. For handling of a replaced module, see Handling replaced SRS airbags / seat belt tensioners Handling Replaced SRS Airbags/Seat Belt Tensioners.

Positioning the steering wheel module

Caution! If a non-deployed steering wheel module is removed temporarily, it must be placed with the metal side (rear) downwards in a protected place.

Connecting special tool

Connect special tool 998 8695 TEST DEVICE 998 8695 Test Device to steering wheel module connector.
This makes it possible to drive the car without the SRS on-board diagnostic (OBD) system registering a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

Hint: If the ignition is switched on when neither the steering wheel module nor special tool are connected, a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will be stored indicating an open-circuit in the cable. Any diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) must be erased.

Slacken off center screw

Slacken off the screw but leave it in place. The screw should be loose enough that it can be unscrewed by hand.

Reconnect the battery negative lead

Align the front wheels

- Drive the car straight forwards or backwards on a level surface so that the wheels point straight ahead.

Caution! It is always important to point the wheels straight ahead when carrying out work that requires the removal of the steering wheel and/or contact reel.

Warning! Do not drive the car further than necessary to align the front wheels. The steering wheel is not properly tightened and the steering wheel module has been removed.

Disconnect the battery negative lead

Ignition off.

Secure the contact reel

Remove the screw from parking position (A) and secure the contact reel in lock position (B). Do not detach the screw from the plastic strip.

Caution! The steering wheel must never be turned while the contact reel is locked. The contact reel pin will shear off.

Remove the steering wheel center screw

Removing steering wheel, steering wheel cover and switch

Caution! The steering wheel must never be turned while the contact reel is locked. The contact reel pin will shear off.

Lift out the steering wheel without turning it. Allow the cable and the plastic strip to pass through the hole in the steering wheel.

Remove:
- 3 Torx 20 screws in steering wheel cover.
- 2 Torx 20 screws on the switch.

Removing contact reel / SRS

Remove:
- the steering wheel cover and switch according to, Removing steering wheel, steering wheel cover and switch.
- 3 contact reel / SRS screws.
- the contact reel connector.

Reassembly

Resetting contact reel

If the locking screw is not in the lock position as illustrated, the contact reel must be reset. For resetting see Resetting SRS contact reel Reset Procedure.

Note! A new contact reel is zeroed at the factory and supplied with the locking screw installed. Zeroed means that the steering wheel can be turned to full lock in either direction without damaging the contact reel.

Installing contact reel / SRS

Install:
- the contact reel / SRS.
- 3 contact reel / SRS screws. Tighten the contact reel screw to 2.5 Nm and ensure that no cable is pinched.
- the connector.
- apply contact grease on the slide rail for better contact.

Install switch, steering wheel covers and steering wheel

Install:
- 2 Torx 20 screws on the switch.
- 3 Torx 20 screws in steering wheel cover.

Caution! Do not turn the steering wheel when the contact reel is locked as the contact reel pin will shear off.

Allow cable and tie straps to pass through the hole in the steering wheel, then install the steering wheel without turning it.

Caution! The steering wheel must be installed in the correct position in relation to front wheel alignment.

If the steering wheel was not installed straight, it must not be turned on the steering column. Carefully remove the steering wheel and try again.

Installing center screw

Caution! Finger tighten the screw. Do not use a tool.

Unlocking the contact reel

Remove the screw from lock position (B) and install it in the parking position (A). Do not detach the screw from the plastic strip.
The contact reel is now unlocked (unsecured) and the steering wheel can be turned.

Connect special tool

Connect special tool 998 8695 TEST DEVICE 998 8695 Test Device.

Reconnect the battery negative lead

Adjusting the front wheels

Drive the car straight forwards or backwards on a level surface so that the wheels point straight ahead.
Carefully turn the steering wheel. Check that it can be turned to full lock in each direction.

Warning! Do not drive the car further than necessary to align the front wheels. The steering wheel is not properly tightened and the steering wheel module has been removed.

If the steering wheel is not straight:
See, Disconnect the battery negative lead, Resetting contact reel.

If the steering wheel will not turn to full lock:
See, Disconnect the battery negative lead, Resetting contact reel.

Tightening center screw

Tighten the steering wheel center screw. Tightening torque = 40 Nm .

Installing airbag steering wheel module

Ignition off and disconnect the battery negative lead

Warning! The battery must not be connected when the steering wheel module is being removed or installed.

Remove special tool

Remove special tool 998 8695 TEST DEVICE 998 8695 Test Device.

Warning! Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected, non-deployed airbag module. This could deploy the airbag.

Ignition in position I

Ignition switch to position I so that the steering wheel lock is disengaged.

Installing steering wheel module

Install:
- the lower section on the steering wheel (1).
- connect ignition cable to module (2).
- fold the module into the steering wheel (3). Check that the SRS ignition cable is not trapped.

Installing steering wheel screws

Screw the module into place from rear, 2 Torx 30 screws in the counter sunk holes in the steering wheel. Turn the wheel to gain access to screws. Tightening torque = 10 Nm .

Caution! When tightening, tighten the right-hand screw first. This is important for the operation of the signal horn.

Conclusion

SRS Airbag date decal

Location Of Components - Warning and Information Decals Inside the Car (On B Pillar):

Note! Do not forget to replace the steering wheel module decal on the driver's side B-post with a new decal.

The date decal is supplied with the new steering wheel module.

Final check

Warning! Ensure that nobody is in the car when the battery is being connected.

When all components have been installed:
- switch the ignition to position II.
- reconnect the battery negative lead.

Check that:
- the steering wheel can be turned easily.
- the horn is working by pressing the four corners of the steering wheel module.
- The SRS indicator lamp in the combined instrument panel is not lit constantly.
If the lamp is lit constantly see SRS Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) table.

Note! Check that the SRS warning lamp is not defective by turning the key to position II. The SRS warning lamp should light and go out after approximately 3 seconds.
