Guidelines for changing
It is recommended that brake fluid is changed every other year. In the event of heavy and frequent braking, for example when alpine driving, or in tropical climates with high humidity, the brake fluid must be changed every year.

Background
The brake fluid is hydroscopic, i.e. the fluid absorbs water molecules from the air. This occurs via the brake hoses and the brake fluid reservoir, which are made of rubber and plastic, and are not impervious to water molecules.
High water content lowers the brake fluid's boiling point greatly, and causes corrosion in the brake system and reduces its function considerably.
Note! Use only Volvo Genuine Parts brake fluid (Volvo DOT 4+). Never reuse brake fluid. Always keep brake fluid in original pack and well sealed.
Note! Continually check that there is sufficient brake fluid in the brake fluid reservoir when replacing brake fluid.
Preparations
- Ignition off
- Raise the car and remove the wheels.
- Clean the filler cap for the brake fluid reservoir.
Use a collecting bottle with a hose to collect the brake fluid.
Changing brake fluid, front
- Remove the protective cap from the bleed nipple.
- Connect the collecting bottle hose. Open the nipple approximately one turn.
- Press in the caliper's pistons at the bottom of the caliper using a G-clamp. See the illustration. Leave the G-clamp in the compressed position.
- Depress the brake pedal to the limit position and keep there for approximately 2 seconds before releasing. Repeat this until 2-3 dl brake fluid has been drained.
- Close the bleed nipple when the brake pedal has been depressed to the limit position.
- Remove the hose and install the protective cap.
- Remove the G-clamp from the brake caliper.
- Depress the brake pedal a few times.
Changing brake fluid, right front
- Repeat the procedure, according to points, on the right front brake caliper.
Removing the brake pads, left rear
- Remove the brake pads from the brake caliper, see Brake pads rear, replacement Brake Pads Rear, Replacement.
Changing the brake fluid, left rear
- Remove the protective cap from the bleed nipple.
- Connect the collecting bottle hose. Open the nipple approximately one turn.
- Press in the caliper's pistons at the bottom of the caliper. Use tool 999 2809 PRESS TOOL 999 2809 Press Tool 9 (2 x). Leave the tools on the caliper.
Remove:
- The tools from the brake caliper.
Installing brake pads, left rear
- Install the brake pads, see Brake pads rear, replacement Brake Pads Rear, Replacement
- Depress the brake pedal a few times.
Changing the brake fluid, right rear
Repeat the procedure, according to points.
Finishing work
- Depress the brake pedal repeatedly until the brake pistons are in the normal position.
- Check the brake fluid level and install the reservoir cover.
Clean up any spilled brake fluid using a warm water and car shampoo.
Fitting the wheel
Ensure that the mating surfaces on the brake discs and rims are clean.
- Lubricate the centering lug on the hub for the rims with rustproofing agent, 116 1038-3.
- Install the wheel.
- Install the screws lightly. Then tighten them crosswise to 110 Nm. When tightening using an impact wrench, use torque socket 115 8147.
Note! Crosswise tightening and torque tightening is important to prevent stresses in the brake disc.
