Gear Shift Shaft Seal






Gear Shift Shaft Seal

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Sleeve (VW 423)

Sealing Grease

- Remove the engine cover with air filter.

- Remove the shift cable lock washer - 2 - from the shift lever - 3 -.






- Remove the shift cable - 1 - from the pin on the shift lever - 3 -.

To avoid damage to the selector cable, the cable retainer must be disconnected from the relay lever before removal.

- Pull the locking mechanism all the way forward in the - direction of arrow 1 - and then unlock it to the left in the - direction of arrow 2 -.






- Push the relay lever forward and guide the selector cable out of the cable retainer.

- Remove the clip - arrow 1 - and then remove the relay lever together with the cable retainer - arrow 2 -.






If it is not possible to remove the relay lever because of the transmission mount bracket, then remove the sliding shoe from the shift lever.

- Remove the shift lever from the gear shift shaft.

- Remove the seal using a screwdriver.

- Lightly oil the new seal on the outer circumference.






- Fill the area between the sealing and dust lips - arrow - halfway with sealing grease.

- Install the new seal using the sleeve (VW 423).






- Install the shift lever to the gear shift shaft. Refer to => [ Shift Lever, Installing ] Shift and Selector Cables Overview and tighten the nut to specification, see - item 6 - in the => [ Shift and Selector Cables Overview ] Shift and Selector Cables Overview.

Grease the bearing areas and sliding surfaces on the relay lever and shift lever. Refer to => [ Relay Lever, Lubricating ] Shift and Selector Cables Overview and to => [ Shift Lever, Lubricating ] Shift and Selector Cables Overview. Grease allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog.

- Install the relay lever and cable retainer - arrow 2 - all the way into the gear shift unit cover.






- Install the clip - arrow 1 - and make sure it is locked into place.

- Apply a small amount of grease on the pin - arrow - on the shift lever - 2 -.






Grease allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog.

- Secure the shift cable with a new lock washer - 1 - to the shift lever.

- Install the selector cable into the cable retainer on the relay lever.

- Adjust the shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

- Install the engine cover with air filter.
