Shift Cable: Service and Repair






Selector Mechanism with Lever and Cable, from 03.09






The selector mechanism and the selector lever cable cannot be separated from each other. Both are removed at the same time. It may be necessary to create some open space in the engine compartment. This air filter housing usually needs to be removed.

In the vehicle interior, it may be necessary to remove the center console.

After installation, the cable movement must be checked and adjusted.

Removing

- Move the selector lever into the "P" position.






- Remove the selector lever handle. Refer to => [ Selector Handle with Cover ] Selector Handle with Cover.

- Remove the center console. Refer to "Storage Compartments, Covers and Trim" in.

- Remove the 4 bolts.






Tightening Specification: 8 Nm

- Lift the vehicle.

- Remove the heat shield under the selector mechanism. This makes it easier to remove the selector mechanism later.

- Remove the heat shield and exhaust system components, if necessary. Refer to one of the following:

Gas engines.

Diesel engines.

Loosen the adjusting bolt - arrow -.






Use pliers to remove the lock washer - B -. Do not use a sharp edged tool. This could damage the rubber grommet.

- Remove the lock washers - A and B -. The lock washers must be replaced when adjusting the cable.

- Remove the selector mechanism.






Installing

Install in reverse order of removal.

- Before positioning the ball head: Check the cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Checking ] Selector Lever Cable, Checking.

- Install the removed exhaust system, if necessary. Refer to one of the following:

Gas engines.

Diesel engines.

- Install the heat shield.

- Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
