Needle Bearing on Right Flange Shaft and Seal on Right Flange Shaft
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Crankshaft Seal Installing Tool (VW 204 B)
• Puller (T10037)
• Torque Wrench 5-50 Nm (V.A.G 1331)
• Hex Extension (V.A.G 1669)
• Arbor (VW 434)
• Drip Tray (V.A.G 1306)
• Assembly Tool (T10047)
Removing
- Remove right wheel.
- Remove the noise insulation (if equipped) under the engine/transmission.
The drive axle heat shield is attached with either 3 or 2 nuts, depending on the engine.
- Remove the drive axle heat shield, if equipped - arrows -.
- Remove the right drive axle.
- Place the (V.A.G 1306) under the transmission.
- Remove the right flange shaft bolt - arrow 1 - using the socket and extended bit. Insert 2 bolts in the flange and counter hold the flange shaft with the pry lever.
- Attach the (T10037) to the right flange shaft.
- Place a spacer (for example, (VW 434) ) between the transmission support and the knurled nut (T10371/1) if necessary.
- Turn the spindle - A - and line up the puller so that is it parallel to the flange.
- Install the right flange shaft.
Install the (T10047) as follows:
- Line up both parts so that the markings "B" face each other.
- The depressions - arrows - must be under the bearing.
- Attach both halves to each other.
- Pry out the locking ring - A - from the needle bearing.
- So that the bearing contact surface on the shaft is not damaged, the shaft must be rotated during the pressing procedure - arrow -.
- Remove the seal - A - from the groove - arrow -.
Installing
- Coat the seal - A - with transmission fluid.
- Install the seal - A - into the groove - arrow - in the flange shaft.
Make sure seal is not tilted.
- Attach (T10047) see Fig. N39-0784..
- So that the bearing contact surface on the shaft is not damaged, the shaft must be rotated during the pressing procedure - arrow -.
- Secure the needle bearing with a new locking ring.
- Carefully install the flange shaft while rotating it at the same time.
- Secure the flange shaft with the countersunk bolt and tighten the bolt to the tightening specification.
- Install the right drive axle.
The drive axle heat shield is attached with either 3 or 2 nuts, depending on the engine.
- Attach the drive axle heat shield to the bevel box.
- Check oil level in bevel box. Refer to => [ Axle Oil in Bevel Box, Checking or Filling ] Procedures.
- Install the noise insulation, if equipped.
