Selector Shaft Seal
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Sleeve (VW 423)
• Pulling Hook (T20143/1)
• Sealing Grease for Seal (G 052 128 A1)
- Remove the air filter housing if it is located above the selector shaft. Refer to one of the following:
Gas engines
Diesel engines
with a Metal Relay Lever
- Remove the clip - 2 - and the relay lever - 3 -.
• If the relay lever cannot be removed due to the transmission mount bracket, remove the selector cable from the relay lever. Remove the slide shoe from the transmission shift lever.
with a Plastic Relay Lever
- Remove the relay lever with the cable retainer. Refer to => [ Plastic Relay Lever ] Plastic Relay Lever.
Continuation for All
- Remove the nut - 4 - and the transmission shift lever - 1 -.
- Pry out the seal using the pulling hook (T20143/1).
- Lightly oil the new seal on the outer circumference.
- Fill the area between the sealing and dust lips - arrow - halfway with sealing grease for seal (G 052 128 A1).
- Drive in the new seal until seated using the sleeve (VW 423).
Further installation is in the reverse order of removal.
- Install the transmission shift lever to the gear shift shaft, refer to => [ Installing the Transmission Shift Lever ] Shift and Selector Cables Overview and tighten the nut to specification, see - item 17 - in the => [ Shift and Selector Cables Overview ] Shift and Selector Cables Overview.
- Install the air filter housing, if it was removed earlier. Refer to one of the following:
