Transmission Cooler: Service and Repair
Transmission Oil Cooler
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Hose Clamps up to 25 mm Dia. (3094)
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Engine Bung Set (VAS 6122)
Removing
- Move the selector lever into the "P" position.
- Remove the battery and the battery tray.
- Place a lint free cloth under the transmission oil cooler on the transmission to absorb any leaking coolant.
• When the engine is warm, the cooling system is under pressure.
• Place a cloth over the cap on the coolant expansion tank and carefully open it before removing the coolant hoses.
- Clamp off the coolant hoses using hose clamps up to 25 mm dia. (3094) and remove the hoses from the transmission oil cooler.
- Seal the coolant hoses and connections with plugs from the engine bung set (VAS 6122).
- Remove the bolts - A - and the transmission oil cooler - B -.
The coolant must not drip into the transmission!
Installing
- Replace the transmission oil cooler O-rings - C -.
- Install the transmission oil cooler - B -, while doing this, pay attention to the O-rings - C -.
- Tighten the new bolts - A - to 20 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
- Install the coolant hoses to the transmission oil cooler and remove the hose clamps up to 25 mm dia. (3094).
- Install the battery tray and the battery.
- Check the coolant level and fill, as necessary.
- After repairing, check the transmission oil level and fill as necessary. Refer to => [ Transmission Oil Level, Checking and Filling ] Transmission Oil Level, Checking and Filling.
Do not start the engine during the coolant level test if the transmission oil has not been filled yet.
