Lower Oil Pan






Lower Oil Pan

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

Silicone Sealant (D 174 003 A2)

Flat Scraper

Hand Drill with Plastic Brush Attachment

Protective Eyewear

Removing

- Remove the noise insulation..

- Drain the engine oil. Refer to Maintenance Procedures.

Observe disposal regulations!

- Remove the oil pan bolts in sequence - 20 through 1 -.






- Remove the lower oil pan, and if necessary loosen it by applying light strikes with a rubber mallet.

Installing

Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Oil Pan/Oil Pump Overview ] Oil Pan/Oil Pump Overview.

The sealing surfaces must be completely free of oil and grease.

Note the expiration date of the silicone sealant.

The lower oil pan must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the silicone sealant.

Replace the bolts which have been tightened to an additional torque angle.

Replace O-rings, seals and self-locking nuts.

- Remove any sealant residue from the upper oil pan with a flat scraper.

Danger of eye injury.

Wear protective eyewear.

- Remove any remaining sealant on the lower oil pan using for example, a rotating plastic brush.






- Clean the sealing surfaces, they must be free of oil and grease.

- Cut the sealant tube nozzle at the front mark (nozzle diameter: approximately 0.12 in).






- Apply the silicone sealant - arrow - to the clean sealing surface of the cylinder head cover as shown.






Thickness of sealant bead: 2 to 3 mm.

The lower oil pan must be installed within 5 minutes after application of the silicone sealant.

The sealant bead may not be thicker than specified, otherwise the excess sealant could enter the oil pan and clog the oil intake tube strainer.

Note the expiration date of the silicone sealant.

- Immediately install the lower oil pan and tighten the new bolts - 1 through 20 - in three passes as follows:






1 - Tighten the bolts hand tight.

2 - Tighten the bolts to 8 Nm.

3 - Tighten the bolts an additional 45° (1/8) turn.

After installing the lower oil pan, the sealant must dry for approximately 30 minutes. Only after then may the engine oil be added.

Further installation is in the reverse order of removal. Note the following:

- Fill the engine oil. Refer to Maintenance Procedures.

- Check the oil level. Refer to => [ Oil Level, Checking ] Testing and Inspection.
