Engine - Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62)
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
Conditions
• The engine is cold.
Removing
- Remove the cover for the intake air duct, disengage the side clips - arrows - to do so.
- Unclip the lower intake air duct, disengage the clips - arrows - to do so.
- Remove both the lower intake air duct and the air duct tube.
- Loosen the hose clamp - 2 -.
- Remove the bolt - 4 -.
- Disconnect electrical connector - arrow -.
- Remove the noise insulation..
- Remove the charge air hose by loosening the clamps - 1 and 2 -.
- Seal off the connection on the charge air cooler with a clean cloth.
- Remove the bolt - 1 - and remove the charge air pipe downward.
- Remove the throttle valve control module. Refer to => [ Throttle Valve Control Module (J338) ] Removal and Replacement.
- Remove the intake manifold support by removing the nut - 2 - and bolt - 1 -.
Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor with a Clip
- Disconnect the connector - 1 - from the ECT sensor.
- Remove the ECT sensor - 2 -, to do so, press the latches - arrow -.
• Install the new ECT sensor with an O-ring as quickly as possible to prevent coolant from leaking out.
ECT sensor with a Retaining Plate
- Disconnect the connector - 2 - from the ECT sensor.
- Remove the bolts - arrows - and remove the retaining plate - 1 -.
- Remove the ECT sensor.
• Install the new ECT sensor with an O-ring as quickly as possible to prevent coolant from leaking out.
Installing
Tightening specifications:
• Coolant pump/thermostat overview. Refer to => [ Coolant Pump/Thermostat Overview ] Coolant Pump/Thermostat Overview.
• Intake manifold overview. Refer to => [ Intake Manifold Overview ] Intake Manifold Overview.
Install in the reverse order of removal. Note the following:
• Replace the O-ring.
- Clean the O-ring sealing surface.
- Check the coolant level. Refer to => [ Coolant, Draining and Filling ] Service and Repair.
