Fluid - M/T: Service and Repair

Transmission Fluid, Checking and Filling

It is not possible to check the fluid l level by removing the oil fill plug.

Due to the angle of the engine/transmission assembly, the lower edge of the fill plug hole - arrow 1 - is located below the fluid level - arrow 2 -.

The fluid level in the transmission can only be checked when the fluid has been drained completely and then filled again:

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

Hose (approximately 600 mm long, outside diameter 10 mm) with commercially available funnel.

Preparing

For the correct fluid, refer to the Parts Catalog.

- Remove the entire air filter housing.

- Remove the noise insulation.

Clean the transmission.

To drain the fluid , the journal for the shift forks in the transmission must be removed.

To avoid changing the position of the shift forks, for example, by involuntarily operating the shift mechanism, the shift rod must be secured.

Secure the gear shift unit shift shaft as follows:

- Push the shift shaft in the - direction of arrow 1 -.

- While pressing the shift shaft down, rotate the locking pin - A - in the - direction of arrow 2 - upward and simultaneously press it in until it engages in the shift shaft.

Draining

Use a clean container (3 liters) that has a scale printed on in, to collect the fluid.

The gear shift unit is secured, refer to.

- Remove the drain plug - arrow 1 - and the support pin - arrow 2 - and drain the transmission fluid.

- Install the support pin - arrow 2 - with a new O-ring. Tighten the bolt to specification, see - item 7 - in => [ Transmission Housing and Shift Mechanism ] Transmission Component Overviews.

- Install the drain plug - arrow 1 - and tighten it to specification, see - item 17 - in => [ Transmission and Clutch Housings ] Transmission and Clutch Housings.

- Turn the locking pin - A - back into its initial position in the - direction of the arrow - so that the shift shaft can move freely again.

Filling

Top off the fluid in the container to 1.7 L.

For the correct fluid, refer to the Parts Catalog.

- Remove the back-up lamp switch (F4) - arrow -.

- Connect a 10 mm diameter hose that is approximately 600 mm long to a funnel.

- Insert the hose into the hole for the back-up lamp switch (2nd technician) and fill the transmission with fluid.

- Reinstall the backup lamp switch - arrow - and tighten it to specification, see - item 2 - in => [ Shift Unit ] Shift Unit.

- Check the function of the shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Function ] Adjustments.

- Install the air filter housing.

- Install the noise insulation.
