Transmission Replacement
Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the cable from negative battery terminal. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Service and Repair).
2. Disconnect the washer hose clamps (1) and washer hose (2).
3. Remove the bolts (1) and hood sub-assembly.
4. Remove the windshield wiper transmission assembly. Refer to Windshield Wiper Transmission Replacement (Service and Repair).
5. Remove the outer cowl top panel.
6. Align the front wheels facing straight ahead.
7. Remove the front wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
8. Remove the engine splash shields. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Left Side (Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Left Side) , Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side (Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side).
9. Drain the automatic transaxle fluid.
10. Remove the No. 2 engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement (Service and Repair).
11. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
12. Remove the battery.
13. Remove the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement (Service and Repair).
14. Disconnect the wire harness.
15. Disconnect the speed sensor connector (2) and wire harness clamp (1).
16. Remove the bolt and transmission control cable bracket.
17. Disconnect the transmission wire connector, park/neutral position switch connector (2) and wire harness clamps.
18. Disconnect the breather hose (1).
19. Disconnect the transmission control cable assembly.
20. Remove the front suspension crossmember. Refer to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement (All Wheel Drive) (Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement)Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement (Two Wheel Drive) (Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement).
21. Remove the flywheel housing under cover.
22. Remove the drive plate and torque converter clutch setting bolt.
Note: One of the six bolts has a different color than the other ones.
23. Remove the torque converter clutch setting bolts while holding the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench.
24. Remove the hose clamps (1, 2), bolt (3) and disconnect the oil cooler.
25. Remove the transmission oil level indicator sub-assembly.
26. Remove the bolt (1) and transmission oil level indicator tube sub-assembly.
27. Remove the O-ring from the transmission oil level indicator tube sub-assembly.
28. Remove the starter assembly. Refer to Starter Replacement (2.4L) (Service and Repair)Starter Replacement (1.8L) (Service and Repair).
29. Support the automatic transaxle assembly with the transmission jack.
30. Remove the bolts (1-7) and automatic transaxle from the engine.
31. Remove the bolts (1-3) and the left engine mounting bracket from the automatic transaxle.
32. Remove the bolts (1-4) and remove the front engine mounting bracket from the automatic transaxle.
33. Remove the bolts (1-3) and remove the rear engine mounting bracket from the automatic transaxle.
34. Remove the bolts (1-2) and the No. 1 transmission control cable bracket from the automatic transaxle.
35. Remove the bolt (1) and speedometer driven hole cover sub-assembly.
36. Remove the torque converter clutch from the automatic transaxle.
Installation Procedure
1. Inspect the torque converter clutch assembly.
2. Install the torque converter clutch assembly.
3. Using vernier calipers, measure dimension A between the transaxle fitting part of the engine and the converter fitting part of the drive plate.
4. Set the key (1) at the top of the front oil pump drive gear and put a matchmark on the housing.
5. Put a matchmark on the torque converter so that its groove is clearly indicated.
6. Align the matchmark (1) on the case with the one on the converter and fit the spline of the input shaft to the spline of the turbine runner.
Note: Rotate the converter approximately 180 degrees (1).
7. Rotating the converter, fit the spline of the stator shaft with that of the stator.
Note: Do not apply excessive force to the converter when rotating it.
8. Rotating the converter, align the mark (1) on the case with the one on the converter and fit the key of the oil pump drive gear into the keyway of the converter.
9. Using vernier calipers and a straightedge, measure dimension B and check that dimension B is greater than dimension A.
Standard: A + 1 mm (0.04 in) or more.
Subtract the thickness of the straightedge from the measured value to gain dimension B.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).
10. Install the speedometer driven hole cover sub-assembly to the automatic transaxle with the bolt (1) and tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb in).
11. Install the No. 1 transmission control cable bracket to the automatic transaxle with the bolts (1, 2) and tighten to12 Nm (106 lb in).
12. Install the rear engine mounting bracket to the automatic transaxle with the bolts (1-3) and tighten to 45 Nm (33 lb ft).
13. Install the front engine mounting bracket to the automatic transaxle with the bolts (1-4) and tighten to 65 Nm (45 lb ft).
14. Install the left engine mounting bracket to the automatic transaxle with the bolts (1-3) and tighten to 52 Nm (38 lb ft).
Note: Confirm that the two knock pins on the transaxle are aligned with the engine block before installing the transaxle.
15. Install the automatic transaxle to the engine with the bolts (1-7) and tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
16. Install the engine mounting insulator.
17. Install the starter assembly. Refer to Starter Replacement (2.4L) (Service and Repair)Starter Replacement (1.8L) (Service and Repair).
18. Apply ATF WS to a new O-ring and install it to the transmission oil level indicator tube sub-assembly.
19. Install the transmission oil level indicator tube sub-assembly to the automatic transaxle with the bolt (1) and tighten to12 Nm (106 lb in).
20. Install the transmission oil level indicator sub-assembly to the transmission oil level indicator tube sub-assembly.
21. Connect the oil cooler hoses to the unions with the hose clamps (1, 2).
22. Install the oil cooler tube to the automatic transaxle with the bolt (3) and tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb in).
23. Apply sealant three bond 1281, or equivalent, to the threads on the tip of the torque converter clutch bolts.
Note: First install the different colored bolt and then install the remaining bolts.
24. Install the torque converter clutch setting bolts while holding the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench. Tighten the bolts to 28 Nm (21 lb ft).
25. Install the flywheel housing under cover to the automatic transaxle.
26. Install the front suspension crossmember. Refer to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement (All Wheel Drive) (Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement)Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement (Two Wheel Drive) (Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement).
27. Install the transmission control cable support to the automatic transaxle with the bolt (1) and tighten to 12 Nm(106 lb in).
28. Connect the clamp onto the transmission control cable support and connect the speed sensor connector to the speed sensor (2).
29. Connect the transmission wire connector, park/neutral position switch connector (2) and wire harness clamps.
30. Install the transmission control cable assembly.
31. Install the breather hose (1).
32. Install the wire harness.
33. Install the battery tray.
34. Install the battery.
35. Install the air cleaner case.
36. Install the outer cowl top panel.
37. Install the windshield wiper transmission assembly. Refer to Windshield Wiper Transmission Replacement (Service and Repair).
38. Connect the cable to negative battery terminal.
39. Install the hood assembly with the bolts (1) and tighten to 13 Nm (115 lb in).
40. Install the washer hose (2) and washer hose clamps (1).
41. Adjust the hood sub-assembly.
42. Install the front wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
43. Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Service and Repair).
44. Add the automatic transaxle fluid.
45. Inspect the transaxle fluid level.
46. Inspect for exhaust gas leak.
47. Adjust the shift lever position.
48. Install the engine splash shields. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Left Side (Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Left Side) , Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side (Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side).
49. Inspect and adjust the front wheel alignment.
50. Install the engine. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement (Service and Repair).
51. Check the ABS speed sensor signal.
Note: Perform the reset memory (at initialization) when replacing the automatic transaxle assembly.
52. Reset the memory.
