Rear Suspension Shock Absorber
Shock Absorber Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT)
Removal Procedure
1. Remove the rear quarter lower trim panel. Refer to Quarter Lower Rear Trim Panel Replacement (Quarter Lower Rear Trim Panel Replacement).
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
3. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
4. If you are removing the left rear shock absorber, remove the 2 bolts (1, 2) and the rear floor side member brace.
5. Use a wrench in order to hold the lower stud on the stabilizer shaft link.
6. Remove the nut (1) from the lower stud on the link.
7. Separate the link from the control arm.
8. Use a block of wood (1) and a jack in order to support the lower control arm.
9. Remove the nut and the bolt (1) from the shock absorber.
10. Separate the shock absorber from the lower control arm.
11. Remove the 3 nuts (1, 2, 3) from the top mount.
12. Remove the 3 bolts (1, 2, 3) from the lower control arm.
13. Move the front of the lower control arm down and toward the outside of the vehicle.
14. Remove the shock absorber with the coil spring.
15. Remove the coil spring, if necessary. Refer to Coil Spring Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Coil Spring Replacement)Coil Spring Replacement (Except All Wheel Drive and GT) (Coil Spring Replacement).
Installation Procedure
1. If you removed the coil spring, install the coil spring. Refer to Coil Spring Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Coil Spring Replacement)Coil Spring Replacement (Except All Wheel Drive and GT) (Coil Spring Replacement).
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).
2. Install the shock absorber with the 3 nuts (1, 2, 3) and tighten to 80 Nm (59 lb ft).
3. Install the shock absorber to the control arm.
Note: Do not tighten the lower shock absorber fasteners. The weight of the vehicle must be on the tire and wheel assemblies before tightening the lower shock absorber fasteners.
4. Install, but do not tighten, the bolt (1) and the nut to the shock absorber.
5. Install the 3 bolts (1, 2, 3) in order to retain the lower control arm to the body and tighten to 65 Nm (48 lb ft).
6. Install the rear floor side member brace with the 2 bolts (1, 2) and tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
7. Install the lower stabilizer shaft link stud to the lower control arm.
8. Install the nut to the stud. Use a wrench (2) in order to hold the stud. Tighten the nut to 44 Nm (32 lb ft).
9. Remove the jack and the block of wood.
10. Install the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
11. Lower the vehicle.
12. Install the rear quarter lower trim panel. Refer to Quarter Lower Rear Trim Panel Replacement (Quarter Lower Rear Trim Panel Replacement).
13. Raise and support the vehicle on an alignment rack or a lift that places the weight of the vehicle on the tires. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
14. With the weight of the vehicle on the tires, push down on the rear bumper 3 times.
15. Tighten the lower shock absorber nut and the bolt (1) to 210 Nm (155 lb ft).
16. Measure the wheel alignment. Adjust the wheel alignment if necessary. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement (Wheel Alignment Measurement).
17. Lower the vehicle.
