Removing and Installing Power Steering Gear




32 13 060 - Removing and installing power steering gear





Special tools required:
- 32 3 090 32 3 090 Extractor





Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove wheels Removing or Installing Front or Rear Wheel
- Remove stabilizer link Removing and Installing/Replacing Push Rod (Stabilizer Link) for Left/Right Stabilizer for stabilizer bar on left and right from stabilizer bar
- Draw off oil from steering fluid reservoir
After completing work:
- Carry out electronic wheel alignment check
- Bleeding power steering Service and Repair





Important!
- Adhere to the utmost cleanliness
- Do not allow any dirt to enter the system
- Close off pipe connections with plugs

Note:
If the power steering gear is replaced on vehicles up to 05/03, both tie rods must also be replaced.

Recycling:
Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations.
Draw hydraulic fluid out of tank -> do not reuse.





Release nuts and press tie rod ends out of steering knuckle with special tool 32 3 090 32 3 090 Extractor (1).

Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.
Tightening torque: 32 21 1AZ [1][2]Specifications





Release nut (1) and remove steering spindle from steering gear.

Installation:
Tightening torque: 32 31 2AZ [1][2]Specifications
Replace self-locking nut.

Detach high-pressure line (2) and low-pressure line (3).

Close off pipe connections with plugs.

Installation:
Replace sealing rings.
Tightening torque (2): 32 41 5AZ Pump and Oil Supply
Tightening torque (3): 32 41 6AZ Pump and Oil Supply





Release screw (1).
Release nut (2) and remove heat shield.

Installation:
Tightening torque: 32 41 12AZ Pump and Oil Supply

Release nut (3) and remove bracket for pressure line.





Release screws (1).

Installation:
Tightening torque: 32 00 1AZ Steering
Take particular care when reinstalling to ensure that the clip for the rubber mount is fitted and aligned correctly.

Important!
Pay attention to different screw length (1) for vehicles up to 05/03.





Swing stabilizer bar (1) upwards.
Turn control head of steering gear (2) downwards in direction of bulkhead and remove to left-hand side.
When replacing steering gear: modify tie rods Service and Repair.





Important!
In cars with 18" John Cooper Works tires, it will be necessary to install steering stop limiters in the new steering gear!
Steering stop limiters must be ordered separately in accordance with the Electronic Parts Catalogue (ETK)!
