Tie Rod: Service and Repair
32 21 231 - Replacing left or right tie rod
Special tools required:
- 32 3 090 32 3 090 Extractor
- 32 3 200 32 3 200 Socket Wrench WAF 34
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove wheels Removing or Installing Front or Rear Wheel.
After completing work, carry out electronic wheel alignment check with KDS.
Important!
To avoid damage to rack and to suspension mounting, move rack in as far as possible.
Clean rack and tie rod.
Grease toothed area of rack, refer to BMW Service Operating Fluids.
The steering gear must be replaced if the polished surface of the rack is damaged (rust).
Release nut on tie rod end.
Press out tie rod end with special tool 32 3 090 32 3 090 Extractor (1).
Installation:
Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening torque 32 21 1AZ [1][2]Specifications.
Release tensioning straps and slide gaiter back.
Release tie rod with special tool 32 3 200 32 3 200 Socket Wrench WAF 34 and torque wrench (1).
Installation:
Tightening torque, 32 21 4AZ [1][2]Specifications.
Replace tensioning straps.
Important!
Setting value on torque wrench
65 Nm = torque level 80 Nm
Important!
Tie rods with lock screw connection:
Tightening torque, 32 21 2AZ [1][2]Specifications.
Important!
Tie rods with clamping ring screw connection:
Tightening torque 32 21 3AZ [1][2]Specifications.
Note:
Observe the repair instruction Removing and installing power steering gear Removing and Installing Power Steering Gear when replacing the power steering gear.
Installation:
Grease tie rod at taper (1) - this prevents the gaiter from rotating when the tie rod rotates.
Fit gaiter and tensioning straps.
