Pinpoint Test L: The Low Fuel Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The low fuel indicator illuminates when the Distance To Empty (DTE) calculation reaches 80 km (50 miles) or less. The DTE is calculated internally by the Instrument Cluster (IC)n from data received from the PCM and the fuel gauge. When the IC receives the data and calculates 80 km (50 miles) or less of fuel remaining in the fuel tank, the fuel gauge indicates low fuel and the IC turns on the low fuel indicator.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- IC
PINPOINT TEST L: THE LOW FUEL INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
-------------------------------------------------
L1 CHECK THE FUEL GAUGE OPERATION
- Observe the fuel gauge operation.
- Does the fuel gauge indicate empty?
Yes
GO to L2.
No
If the fuel gauge is inoperative or indicating incorrectly, Go To Pinpoint Test B for Front Wheel Drive (FWD) sedan or Go To Pinpoint Test C for wagon or All-Wheel Drive (AWD) sedan. Pinpoint Test B: Incorrect Fuel Gauge Indication - L-Shaped Fuel Tank Pinpoint Test C: Incorrect Fuel Gauge Indication - Saddle-Type Fuel Tank
If the fuel gauge is operating but not indicating empty, GO to L4.
-------------------------------------------------
L2 CARRY OUT THE IC INDICATOR LAMP ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Select the IC low fuel (LOFUEL) active command. Command the low fuel warning indicator on and off. Observe the low fuel warning indicator.
- Does the low fuel warning indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
GO to L3.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
L3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND IC SELF-TESTS
- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0100, Go To Pinpoint Test AE. Pinpoint Tests AE: DTC U0100
For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
No
GO to L4.
-------------------------------------------------
L4 CHECK THE DTE OPERATION
- Ignition ON.
- Access and observe the message center or integrated display DTE displayed mileage.
- Does the DTE display indicate 80 km (50 miles) or less until empty?
Yes
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The low fuel warning message does not appear until the DTE is 80 km (50 miles) or less.
