ODS Unit Initialization
Special Tools Required
- SCS Service Connector 07PAZ-001010A
NOTE:
- After SRS unit or ODS unit is replaced, do this procedure to initialize the ODS unit.
- ODS unit initialization will initialize both OPDS sensor and front passenger's weight sensor.
OPDS Sensor Initialization With the HDS
When you replace a seat-back cover/pad, SRS unit, and/or ODS unit, initialize the OPDS sensor with the HDS.
NOTE:
- A new (uninitialized) ODS unit installed with a faulty OPDS sensor (DTCs 86-1x or 86-2x) can cause DTCs 85-71 and 85-78. If the SRS has a hard DTC 86-1x or 86-2x, troubleshoot the DTCs completely before replacing the ODS unit.
- Before initializing the ODS unit, make sure the battery is fully charged.
- Before initializing the ODS unit, clear the DTCs.
- Make sure nothing is on the front passenger's seat, including after market seat covers or mats.
- Make sure there is nothing in the front passenger's seat-back pocket.
- Keep the A/C and the heater off.
1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
2. Set the seat-back in a normal position.
3. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
4. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A).
5. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
6. Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle and the SRS unit. If it does not communicate, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting:
- R18A1 engine Testing and Inspection
- K20Z3 engine Testing and Inspection
7. From the HDS Main Menu, select SRS, then INITIALIZATION. In the INITIALIZATION Menu, select ODS Initialization. Follow the prompts until the OPDS sensor initialization has been completed.
8. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), then wait for 10 seconds.
9. Disconnect the HDS from the DLC.
NOTE: If the ODS unit fails to initialize after several attempts, replace the seat-back cover/pad with equipped OPDS sensor Front Seat-Back Cover Replacement (2-Door), and retry. If the ODS unit continues to fail to initialize, replace the ODS unit ODS Unit Replacement.
OPDS Sensor Initialization Without the HDS
1. Adjust the front passenger's seat-back cover/pad to a normal upright position, and remove anything that is on or near the seat.
2. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
3. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC).
4. If not already connected the HDS to the DLC, then turn on the HDS, but do not turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
5. From the Select Mode screen, select SCS, and follow the screen prompts.
6. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
7. Connect the SCS service connector (A) to the yellow MES 2P connector (B). Do not use a jumper wire.
8. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
9. The SRS indicator will come on for about 6 seconds, and then go off. Unplug the SCS service connector from the MES 2P connector within 4 seconds after the indicator goes off.
10. The SRS indicator will come on again, plug the SCS service connector to the MES 2P connector within 4 seconds after the indicator comes on.
11. When the SRS indicator goes off, unplug the SCS service connector from the MES 2P connector within 4 seconds.
12. Watch the SRS indicator:
- If the indicator blinks twice and then goes off, the ODS unit is initialized. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), and disconnect the HDS. Return the vehicle to your customer.
- If the indicator blinks twice and then stays on, the ODS unit is initialized, but the SRS DTCs need to be cleared. Clear the DTC memory.
- If the indicator stays on without first blinking, the ODS unit is not initialized. Repeat steps 3 thru 11.
Front Passenger's Weight Sensor Initialization With the HDS
When you replace the SRS unit, the front passenger's weight sensor, the front passenger's seat frame, or the ODS unit, initialize the front passenger's weight sensor with the HDS.
NOTE:
- Before initializing the front passenger's weight sensor, make sure the battery is fully charged.
- Before initializing the ODS unit, clear the DTCs.
- Make sure all components of the front passenger's seat are correctly installed.
- Make sure nothing is on the front passenger's seat, including after market seat covers or mats.
- Make sure there is nothing in the front passenger's seat-back pocket.
- Keep the windows closed.
- Do all initialization procedures, except test-driving, in the service bay.
- Make sure the vehicle is on level ground.
- Keep the A/C and the heater off.
- Do not touch the front passenger's seat during the operation check.
- Do not expose the front passenger's seat to sudden temperature changes.
1. Position the front passenger's seat all the way rearward, and adjust the seat-back to the forward most position. Do not move the seat from this position until the initialization is completed.
2. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
3. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A).
4. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
5. Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle and the SRS unit. If it does not communicate, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting:
- R18A1 engine Testing and Inspection
- K20Z3 engine Testing and Inspection
6. Drive the vehicle, and accelerate to 22 mph (36 km/h), then stop on level ground.
7. From the HDS Main Menu, select SRS, then INITIALIZATION. In the INITIALIZATION Menu, select SWS Initialization. Follow the prompts until the front passenger's weight sensor initialization has been completed.
8. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
9. Disconnect the HDS from the DLC.
Front Passenger's Weight Sensor Initialization Without the HDS
When you replace the SRS unit, the front passenger's weight sensors, the front passenger's seat frame, or the ODS unit, calibrate the ODS unit.
NOTE:
- Before initializing the front passenger's weight sensor, make sure the battery is fully charged.
- Make sure all components of the front passenger's seat are correctly installed, including after market seat covers or mats.
- Make sure nothing is on the front passenger's seat.
- Make sure nothing is on the front passenger's seat-back pocket.
- Keep the windows and the moonroof closed.
- Perform all initialization procedures except, test driver's, in the service bay.
- Make sure the vehicle is on level ground.
- Keep the A/C and the heater off.
- Do not touch the front passenger's seat during the operation check.
- Do not expose the front passenger's seat to sudden temperature changes.
6. Make sure the ignition switch is in LOCK (0).
7. Connect the SCS service connector (A) to the yellow MES 2P connector (B). Do not use a jumper wire.
8. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
9. The SRS indicator will come on for about 6 seconds, and then go off. Put off the seat belt buckle within 4 seconds after the indicator goes off.
10. The SRS indicator will come on again. Put on the seat belt buckle within 4 seconds after the indicator comes on.
11. When the SRS indicator goes off, Put off the seat belt buckle within 4 seconds after the indicator comes on.
Go to clear the DTC memory.
- If the indicator stays on without first blinking, the ODS unit is not initialized. Repeat steps 3 thru 11.
