Wipers and Washers - Front

Component Description

Front Wiper Motor

There are 2 front wiper motors, one on the LH (Left Hand) side of the vehicle and one on the RH (Right Hand) side of the vehicle. The 2 motors share a common voltage source and a common ground circuit. The wiper motors contain a logic module and a 2-speed motor. There is no mechanical linkage between the motor and the wiper arm, the wiper arms are mounted directly to the wiper motors.

When a new wiper motor is installed or an existing motor is removed and then re-installed, the wiper motor must be initialized. REFER to Windshield Wiper Motor Initialization Testing and Inspection.

Wiper/Washer Switch

The wiper/washer switch is located on the RH (Right Hand) side of the steering column and is mounted directly to the SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module). The wiper/washer switch is a multiple position, multifunction switch that provides the front windshield wiper/washer inputs to the SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module):

- OFF

- INT 1

- INT 2

- INT 3

- INT 4

- INT 5

- Low speed

- High speed

- Front washer

Washer Pump

The washer pump is a bi-directional motor used to deliver washer fluid to the windshield when activated. The front and rear washer system share the same washer reservoir and the same washer pump.

Body Control Module (BCM)

The BCM (Body Control Module) is mounted behind the glove box and both monitors and controls the front and rear wiper/washer systems. The BCM (Body Control Module) monitors all LIN (Local Interconnect Network) and all HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) messages that relate to the wiper/washer system and then directly controls the wiper motors and/or relays necessary for wiper/washer operation. The BCM (Body Control Module) is capable of setting DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) in the event of a circuit, component or network failure.

To operate correctly, the BCM (Body Control Module) must be configured with the correct vehicle information when installed new. REFER to Programmable Module Installation (PMI) .

Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM)

The SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) module is located on the steering column behind the steering wheel and clockspring. In addition to sending steering wheel position information over the HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network), the SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) is also equipped with an additional microprocessor that receives input from the wiper/washer switch, transforms that information into a command message and transmits it to the BCM (Body Control Module) over a private LIN (Local Interconnect Network).

When a new SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) is installed, the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module must be calibrated or initialized. The calibration procedure (IVD Initialization) is carried out using the scan tool.

Rain Sensor

The rain sensor contains an optical measuring and evaluation circuit comprised of a LED (Light-emitting Diode), a lens through which the light from the LED (Light-emitting Diode) is projected, and a photodiode that captures the projected light when it is reflected from any water on the windshield.

The silicone pad between the rain sensor and the windshield is available separately for service, if any other part requires servicing, a new rain sensor must be installed. Also, there is no calibration or configuration that needs to take place before or after installing a new rain sensor or when removing and re-installing an existing rain sensor.
