Wiper Motor: Testing and Inspection
Windshield Wiper Motor Initialization
WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure, REFER to Safety Warnings . Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
General Procedure
NOTE: Do not set the ignition to OFF during the procedure. Setting the ignition to OFF will cause the BCM (Body Control Module) to accept the current windshield wiper arm position as the "initialized" position.
NOTE: Make sure the windshield is clean and dry before carrying out this procedure.
1. Ignition ON.
2. Using a scan tool, place the BCM (Body Control Module) in Learn Mode using the WMM Calibration.
3. Press the RH (Right Hand) multifunction switch arm down 3 times within 5 seconds. The windshield wiper arms will move to a preset or" pre-initialization" position.
4. NOTICE: If the wiper arms are pulled closer to the A-pillar than the specified distance during this step, do not attempt to move the wiper arms back toward the" pre-initialization" position manually. Damage to the wiper motor can occur.
Gently pull the windshield wiper blades out toward the A-pillar moulding until the distance between the wiper arm and the A-pillar moulding is 41.5 mm (1.63 in).
5. If the wiper arms are pulled closer to the A-pillar moulding than the specified distance, follow these steps:
1. Select INTERMITTENT on the wiper/washer switch.
2. Select OFF on the wiper/washer switch. The wiper arms will move back to the" pre-initialization" position.
3. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 as necessary until the correct distance between the wiper arm and A-pillar moulding is achieved.
6. Press the RH (Right Hand) multifunction switch arm down 1 time. This will set the current windshield wiper arm position as the" approved" position and the wiper arms will move back to the PARK position.
7. Using the scan tool, place the BCM (Body Control Module) in Normal Mode using the WMM Calibration.
8. Carry out a low speed windshield wipe to make sure the windshield wiper motors and arms park in the correct position.
9. Carry out a high speed windshield wipe on a wet windshield to make sure the wiper blades to not contact the A-pillar.
