SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

Pinpoint Test

1. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST

1. Using a scan tool, perform the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.

Are any DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) recorded?

2. CHECK THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) OUTPUT AT THE LH (Left Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH

1. Ignition OFF.

2. WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

Remove the driver air bag module. REFER to Driver Air Bag Module. Driver Air Bag Module

3. While pressing each of the LH (Left Hand) upper steering wheel switch buttons, measure:

Does the resistance match the specification below?

3. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE LH (Left Hand) STEERING WHEEL SWITCH AND THE STEERING WHEEL TO AIR BAG INLINE FOR AN OPEN

3. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

4. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH RETURN CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE LH (Left Hand) STEERING WHEEL SWITCH AND THE STEERING WHEEL TO AIR BAG INLINE FOR AN OPEN

1. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

5. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE STEERING WHEEL TO AIR BAG INLINE AND THE UPPER CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN

1. Disconnect: Upper Clockspring C218B.

2. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

6. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH RETURN CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE STEERING WHEEL TO AIR BAG INLINE AND THE UPPER CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN

1. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

7. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT THROUGH THE CLOCKSPRING

1. Remove the clockspring. REFER to Clockspring .

2. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

8. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT THROUGH THE CLOCKSPRING

1. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

9. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT THROUGH THE SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module)

1. Disconnect: SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) C226B.

2. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

10. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH RETURN CIRCUIT THROUGH THE SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module)

1. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

11. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) AND THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) FOR AN OPEN

1. Disconnect: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster).

2. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

12. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH RETURN CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) AND THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) FOR AN OPEN

1. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

13. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SIGNAL AND RETURN CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER

1. Disconnect: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster).

2. Measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

14. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SIGNAL AND RETURN CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) DISCONNECTED

1. Disconnect: SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) C226A.

2. Measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

15. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SIGNAL AND RETURN CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE CLOCKSPRING DISCONNECTED

2. Disconnect: Clockspring C218B.

3. Disconnect: Steering Wheel to Air Bag Inline.

4. Measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

16. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SIGNAL AND RETURN CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE LH (Left Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH DISCONNECTED

1. Disconnect: LH (Left Hand) Upper Steering Wheel Switch.

2. Measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

17. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

1. Measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

18. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) DISCONNECTED

1. Disconnect: SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) C226A.

2. Measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

19. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE AIR BAG REMOVED

2. Measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

20. CHECK FOR CORRECT IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) OPERATION

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect and inspect the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) connector.

3. Repair:

- corrosion (install new connector or terminals- clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

4. Reconnect the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.

5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?
