Diagnostic Routine D

Diagnostic Overview

Steering Wheel Controls Are Inoperative Or Do Not Operate Correctly

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 130 for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

REFER to Steering Wheel Switch Function .

DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

Visual Inspection and Diagnostic Pre-checks

- Inspect the RH (Right Hand) upper steering wheel switches for sticking condition.

Pinpoint Test

1. CHECK THE DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)

1. Ignition ON.

2. Using a scan tool, perform FCDIM (Front Control/Display Interface Module) self-test.

Is DTC B10BD:23 retrieved?

2. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH PIDs (Parameter Identifications)

1. Ignition ON.

2. Using a scan tool, view FCDIM (Front Control/Display Interface Module) PIDs (Parameter Identifications).

3. Monitor the steering wheel controls PIDs (Parameter Identifications) while pressing each RH (Right Hand) upper steering wheel switch:

- Mode (SCS_MODE)
- SEEK+ (SCS_SEEKPLUS)
- SEEK- (SCS_SEEKMINUS
- VOL+ (SCS_VOL UP)
- VOL+ (SCS_VOL DOWN)

Do the PID (Parameter Identification) values agree with the switch positions?

3. CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS CIRCUITRY FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: FCDIM (Front Control/Display Interface Module).

3. Disconnect: BCM (Body Control Module) C2280C.

4. WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

Remove the air bag and leave inline C260 to the upper switches connected. REFER to Driver Air Bag Module. Driver Air Bag Module

5. Disconnect: RH (Right Hand) Upper Steering Wheel Switch.

6. Measure:

Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?

4. CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

1. Disconnect: Clockspring C218A.

2. Measure:

Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?

5. CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL HARNESS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

1. Connect: Clockspring C218A.

2. Disconnect: Clockspring C218B.

3. Measure:

Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?

6. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER

1. Measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

7. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH HARNESS DISCONNECTED

1. Disconnect: Steering Wheel to Air Bag Inline C260.

2. Measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

8. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE STEERING WHEEL SWITCH HARNESS DISCONNECTED

1. Disconnect: Clockspring C218B.

2. Measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

9. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE CLOCKSPRING DISCONNECTED

1. Disconnect: Clockspring C218A.

2. Measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

10. CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS CIRCUITRY FOR AN OPEN

1. Disconnect: Clockspring C218A.

2. Measure:

Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?

11. CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN

1. Disconnect: Clockspring C218B.

2. Measure:

Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?

12. CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL HARNESS FOR AN OPEN

1. Disconnect: RH (Right Hand) Upper Steering Wheel Switch.

2. Measure:

Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?

13. CHECK FOR CORRECT FCDIM (Front Control/Display Interface Module) OPERATION

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect and inspect the FCDIM (Front Control/Display Interface Module) connector.

3. Repair:

- corrosion (install new connectors or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

4. Reconnect the FCDIM (Front Control/Display Interface Module) connector. Make sure it seats and latch correctly.

5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?
