Diagnostic Routine G
Diagnostic Routine G
Diagnostic Overview
The Keyless Entry Keypad Illumination Is Inoperative Or Always On
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 117 for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.
Normal Operations and Fault Conditions
When any keypad button is pressed, the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module sends voltage to the keyless entry keypad LEDs (Light-emitting Diodes) on the illumination circuit to assist the driver in entering an access code at night. The keyless entry keypad has a separate ground circuit for the LEDs (Light-emitting Diodes).

Visual Inspection and Diagnostic Pre-checks
- Keyless entry keypad
Pinpoint Test
1. CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD ILLUMINATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Check the keyless entry keypad illumination.
Is the keyless entry keypad illumination always on?
2. CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD INPUT TO THE RFA (Remote Function Actuator) MODULE
1. Using a scan tool, monitor the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module PIDs (Parameter Identifications).
2. Touch several keyless entry keypad buttons while observing the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module PIDs (Parameter Identifications) Keypd_SW_1_2, Keypd_SW_3_4, Keypd_SW_5_6, Keypd_SW_7_8 and Keypd_SW_9_0.
Do the PIDs (Parameter Identifications) display the correct values?
3. CHECK THE RFA (Remote Function Actuator) MODULE DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE SELF-TEST
1. Using a scan tool, perform the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module self-test.
Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) B121A:11 present?
4. CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
1. Disconnect: Keyless Entry Keypad.
2. Using a scan tool, clear the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes).
3. Using a scan tool, perform the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module self-test.
Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) B121B:11 recorded?
5. CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD ILLUMINATION CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect: RFA (Remote Function Actuator) Module C2153D.
3. Measure:
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
6. CHECK FOR RFA (Remote Function Actuator) MODULE OUTPUT
1. Using a scan tool, view RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module PIDs (Parameter Identifications).
2. While active commanding the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module PID (Parameter Identification) KEYPD_LMP_OS ON, measure:
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
7. CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD ILLUMINATION CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect: RFA (Remote Function Actuator) Module C2153D.
3. Measure:
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
8. CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD ILLUMINATION CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
1. Disconnect: RFA (Remote Function Actuator) Module C2153D.
2. Ignition ON.
3. Observe the keypad illumination.
Is the keypad still illuminated?
9. CHECK FOR CORRECT RFA (Remote Function Actuator) MODULE OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect all RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module connectors.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminals- clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins- install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins- install new pins as necessary
4. Reconnect all RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
