Diagnostic Overview

The Doors Do Not Lock or Unlock Using The Keyless Entry Keypad

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 117 for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.

Normal Operations and Fault Conditions

REFER to Keyless Entry Keypad (for the keyless entry keypad operation) and REFER to Keyless Entry Keypad (for a description on the keypad).

The permanent keyless entry keypad code is permanently stored in the BCM (Body Control Module) and cannot be changed. The code is also printed on a label, located on the BCM (Body Control Module). The permanent code from the BCM (Body Control Module) is programmed into the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module. The permanent keypad code can also be retrieved with the scan tool. The scan tool retrieves and displays the permanent keycode from the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module.

DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

Visual Inspection and Diagnostic Pre-checks

- Keyless entry keypad

- BCM (Body Control Module) fuse 21 (10A)

Pinpoint Test

1. CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD ILLUMINATION

1. Touch the keyless entry keypad in several places.

Do the keypad numbers illuminate?

2. CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD INDICATOR

1. Touch the keyless entry keypad in several places.

Does the round indicator on the top of the keypad light up?

3. CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: Keyless Entry Keypad.

3. Measure:

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

4. CHECK THE KEYPAD GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

1. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

5. COMPARE THE KEYCODE PID
NOTE: The permanent keypad code in the scan tool does not display even numbers. If the permanent code has even numbers in it, the scan tool will display an odd number that corresponds with the same button on the keypad. For example, if the keycode contains the number 2, the scan tool will display the number 1 in its place.

1. Using a scan tool, retrieve and record the keyless entry keypad code.

2. Obtain the keyless entry keypad code from the label on the BCM (Body Control Module) or from the Owner's Literature.

Does the keycode from the scan tool correspond with the keycode from the BCM (Body Control Module) label or Owner's Literature?

6. CHECK THE KEYCODE

1. Enter the 5-digit permanent entry code on the keyless entry keypad, then touch the 3/4 button.

Do the doors unlock?

7. RETRIEVE THE RFA (Remote Function Actuator) MODULE DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE SELF-TEST

1. Using a scan tool, perform the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module self-test.

Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) B121B:11 recorded?

8. REPEAT THE RFA (Remote Function Actuator) MODULE SELF-TEST

1. Disconnect: Keyless Entry Keypad.

2. Using a scan tool, clear the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes).

3. Using a scan tool, perform the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module self-test.

Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) B121B:11 recorded?

9. CHECK THE KEYPAD INPUT CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: RFA (Remote Function Actuator) Module C2153B.

3. Measure:

Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?

10. CHECK THE RFA (Remote Function Actuator) MODULE KEYPAD PIDs (Parameter Identifications)

1. Using a scan tool, view the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module PIDs (Parameter Identifications).

2. Press each keyless entry keypad button while observing the PIDs (Parameter Identifications) Keypd_SW_1_2, Keypd_SW_3_4, Keypd_SW_5_6, Keypd_SW_7_8, and Keypd_SW_9_0.

Do the PIDs (Parameter Identifications) display the correct values?

11. CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD

1. Using a scan tool, view the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module PIDs (Parameter Identifications).

2. Monitor the keyless entry keypad PID (Parameter Identification) Keypd_SW _1_2.

3. Connect a fused jumper wire:

4. Monitor the keyless entry keypad PID (Parameter Identification) Keypd_SW _7_8.

5. Connect a fused jumper wire:

6. Monitor the keyless entry keypad PID (Parameter Identification) Keypd_SW _9_0.

7. Connect a fused jumper wire:

Do the PIDs (Parameter Identifications) display active when the jumper wire is connected?

12. CHECK THE KEYPAD INPUT CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

1. Disconnect: RFA (Remote Function Actuator) Module C2153B.

2. Measure:

Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?

13. CHECK THE KEYPAD INPUT CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO EACH OTHER

1. Measure:

Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?

14. CHECK FOR CORRECT RFA (Remote Function Actuator) MODULE OPERATION

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect and inspect all RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module connectors.

3. Repair:

- corrosion (install new connector or terminals- clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins- install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins- install new pins as necessary

4. Reconnect all RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?
