Connecting Rod Bearing: Service and Repair
Piston, Connecting Rod, and Bearing Replacement
Special Tools

Removal Procedure
1. Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement Service and Repair.
2. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement Service and Repair.
3. Rotate the crankshaft to a position where the connecting rod fasteners are the best accessible.
4. Mark the connecting rod and cap with the cylinder position. Also mark their orientation. This will ensure the caps and connecting rods will re-assembled properly.
5. Remove any ridge at the top of the cylinder bore to avoid damage to the piston ring lands.
6. Remove the bearing cap bolts (3) and the bearing caps (2) with the lower bearing (1).
7. Install the EN-43966-1 - connecting guides on the connecting rod threads before removing the piston and connecting rod assembly.
8. Remove the piston (1) with the connecting rod (2) and the upper bearing (3).
9. Remove the EN-43966-1 - connecting guides.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the EN-43966-1 - connecting guides to the connecting rod threads. This protects the crankshaft journal during piston and connecting rod installation.
2. Install the EN-43953 - ring compressor to the piston and the connecting rod to the correct bore.
3. Install the piston (1) with the connecting rod (2) and the NEW upper bearing (3).
4. Hold the EN-43953 - ring compressor against the engine block until all the rings have entered the cylinder bore.
5. Remove the EN-43966-1 - connecting guides.
Note:
Install the bearing caps (1) in their original position.
6. Install the NEW lower bearing (1) with the bearing caps (2).
Caution:
Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.
Caution:
Refer to Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution.
7. Install the bearing caps bolts (3) and tighten a first pass to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).
8. Tighten the bearing caps bolts (3) a final pass to an additional 100°, using the EN-45059 - meter.
9. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement Service and Repair.
10. Install the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement Service and Repair.
