Rear Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair




11 14 151 - Replacing crankshaft radial seal (N73)





Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Drain engine oil Engine Oil Service.

- Remove transmission Removing and Installing Automatic Transmission (6HP26Z/6HP32Z).
- Remove flywheel Service and Repair.





Note:
The radial seal can only be replaced completely with the end cover.





Release screws (1).
Loosen screws (2).
Carefully remove end cover.

Note:
Do not damage oil sump gasket. replacing if necessary.





Important!
The sealing lip of the radial seal is highly sensitive and must not be kinked.
Do not touch the sealing lip with your fingers.
If the radial seal (1) is stored for more than six months without the support sleeve (2), its operational reliability will no longer be guaranteed.
The support sleeve (2) remains in the radial seal and is used as a slip sleeve in the installation described later.
Support sleeve (2) is included in scope of delivery.





Important!
Special tool 11 2 390 must not be used.





Installation:
Check dowel sleeves (1) for damage and correct installation position.
Sealing faces must be dry and oil-free.
Apply a thin coat of Drei Bond 1209 (refer to BMW Parts Service) to contact points on joint along oil sump.





Installation:
Lightly oil running surfaces of crankshaft.
Fit end cover (1) with support sleeve (2) on crankshaft and push on carefully.





Assemble engine.
