Shift Mechanism Function Unit

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Pry Lever - Rmv Outside Mirror (80 - 200)

Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)

Transmission Support (T10337)

Socket and Key (T40031)

Removing

- Remove the selector lever handle. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Handle ] Selector Lever Handle.

- Remove the front ashtray or storage compartment.

- Move the selector lever into "D".

- Insert the (T40031) through the opening - arrow - in the selector mechanism and loosen the bolt on the selector lever cable one turn.






- Disconnect the connectors - 2 and 4 -.






The illustration does not show the insulation mat.

A second technician is required when detaching shift mechanism below vehicle.

Ignore - arrows -.

- Remove the insulation mat over the shift mechanism.

- Remove the bolts - 1, 3, 5 and 6 -.

- Remove the noise insulation - 1 and 2 -.






- Remove the crossbrace.






The suspension components could be damaged.

Do not rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe mount, the steering gear or the subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly.

- Remove the left and right front mufflers.

- Remove the bolts - arrows - for the driveshaft intermediate bearing.






- Lower the driveshaft.

The driveshaft can be bent as far as the end stop of the center joint provided that no force is used. Bending the joint forcibly to the end stop can damage the center joint and/or the protective boot.

- Remove the lock washers - 1 -, (if equipped).






- Pull the noise insulation - 2 - off the selector mechanism - 4 - and push it forward toward the selector lever cable - 3 -.

- Remove the selector lever cable clip - 1 - toward the side.






- Remove the selector lever cable - 2 - from the selector mechanism.

Do not bend the selector lever cable.

- Mount the (T10337) on the (V.A.G 1383 A) and attach it to the bottom of the transmission.






- Raise the transmission slightly.

There is the risk of an accident.

The (V.A.G 1383 A) may only be used during assembly and must not sit unsupervised under the vehicle.

- Remove the bolts from the tunnel crossmember - arrows -.






- Lower the transmission to dimension - a - using the (V.A.G 1383 A).






Dimension - a - = maximum 70 mm.

- Remove the selector mechanism function unit.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

Tightening specifications:

=> [ Selector Mechanism Overview ] 0BKA Automatic Transmission

=> [ Selector Lever Cable Overview ] Description and Operation

- Install the selector mechanism function unit and tighten it from the top.

- Install selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable ] Service and Repair.

- Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting ] 0BKA Automatic Transmission.

- Install tunnel crossmember. Refer to => [ Tunnel Crossmember ] Tunnel Crossmember.

- Selector mechanism, checking, refer to => [ Selector Mechanism, Checking ] Selector Mechanism, Checking.

Check the vehicle data label or the designation on the rear final drive itself to determine which one is installed in the vehicle. Then select the correct rear final drive repair manual.

- Install the driveshaft center bearing.

- Install the crossbrace.

- Install the exhaust system.

- Install the noise insulation.

- Install the front ashtray or storage compartment.

- Install the selector lever handle. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Handle ] Selector Lever Handle.
