Multicontour Seat, Removing, With Faulty Seat Forward/Back Adjustment Motor V28/V31 or Faulty Control Module J136/J521
Driver seat forward/back adjustment motor (V28) / front passenger seat forward/back adjustment motor (V31) / memory seat/steering column adjustment control module (J136) / Front passenger memory seat control module (J521)
Test the seat forward/back adjustment motor (V28) / (V31) or control module (J136) / (J521)
• Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Pyrotechnic, Electrical and Mechanical Restraint System Components, Safety Precautions and Testing Procedures ] Testing and Inspection.
• Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
- Move the front seat all the way up.
• Check electrical and electronic components and wires before removing front seat further to avoid unnecessary repair costs.
- Perform the following tests:
• Check the fuse.
• Check the voltage at the connector station and perform fault finding if necessary.
• Check the voltage to the control module.
• Check the voltage to the seat forward/back adjustment motor.
- Replace the fuse if faulty.
- If there is no voltage at the connector station, repair or replace the wire.
- Replace the seat pan lower frame together with seat forward/back adjustment motor, refer to => [ Seat Forward/Back Adjustment Motors V28 and V31 ] Seat Forward/Back Adjustment Motors V28 and V31.
- Replace the control module (J136) / (J521) if faulty. Refer to => [ Memory Seat/Steering Column Adjustment Control Module J136/J521 ] Memory Seat/Steering Column Adjustment Control Module J136/J521.
Removing a faulty seat forward/back adjustment motor (V28) / (V31)
Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
- Disconnect the ground cable from the battery with the ignition on.
- Remove the front belt anchor. Refer to => [ Front Belt End Fitting ] Front Belt End Fitting.
- Disconnect the connectors on the connector station in the floor. Refer to => [ Harness Connectors, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Harness Connectors, Disconnecting and Connecting.
- Connect airbag adapter connector (VAS 6282) to the side airbag harness connector. Refer to => [ Airbag Adapter VAS 6282, Connecting ] Airbag Adapter VAS 6282, Connecting.
- Remove the screw - 3 -.
- Detach the seat position sensor - 2 - at the hooks - arrow - from the seat pan lower frame - 1 -.
- Unclip the electrical wire from the seat pan lower frame and set aside.
- Disconnect the electrical connector on the seat forward/back adjustment motor.
- Remove modular wire routing bracket on the seat pan lower frame.
- Remove the bolts - 4 -.
- Detach retaining plate - 3 - on the seat pan lower frame - arrow - and remove.
Danger of damaging the threaded the holes or the bushing in the bearing points (connecting the upper and lower frame).
A second technician is needed to be pushing on the seat via the backrest while removing the following screws.
- Remove the screw - 6 -.
- Remove the bolts - 1 and 5 -.
- With a second technician, separate the upper seat frame - 2 - from the lower frame - 7 - and remove from the vehicle.
Risk of damage to the bushings - 1 - in the bearing points - 2 - (upper/lower threaded connection).
• The bushings cannot be replaced with workshop materials.
• If the bushings are damaged, the corresponding assembly parts must be replaced.
- Remove accessible bolts for the seat rails on the console.
• For reasons of clarity, the surrounding area is not shown.
- Remove screws - 2, 5 - and remove defective forward/back adjustment motor - 1 - together with bracket.
- Push seat rail - 3, 4 - forward or back until the respective seat rail bolt is accessible.
- Remove the screws and the seat rail.
- Replace the seat pan lower frame together with seat forward/back adjustment motor. Refer to => [ Seat Forward/Back Adjustment Motors V28 and V31 ] Seat Forward/Back Adjustment Motors V28 and V31.
Removing a faulty control module (J136) / (J521)

• Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
- Disconnect the ground cable from the battery with the ignition on.
- Remove the front belt anchor. Refer to => [ Front Belt End Fitting ] Front Belt End Fitting.
- Disconnect the electrical connector on the seat forward/back adjustment motor.
- Connect seat forward/back adjustment motor to an external 12-volt voltage source and move front seat forward or back until the respective bolts are visible.
- Remove the bolts - 1, 2, 3, 5 -.
- Disconnect the connectors on the connector station in the floor. Refer to => [ Harness Connectors, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Harness Connectors, Disconnecting and Connecting.
- Connect airbag adapter connector (VAS 6282) to the side airbag harness connector. Refer to => [ Airbag Adapter VAS 6282, Connecting ] Airbag Adapter VAS 6282, Connecting.
- Remove the front seat from the vehicle with a second technician.
- Attach front seat to the fixture for seat repair (VAS 6136). Refer to => [ Installing Front Seat on Fixture for Seat Repair VAS 6136 ] Installing Front Seat on Fixture For Seat Repair VAS 6136.
- Replace control module (J136) / (J521). Refer to => [ Memory Seat/Steering Column Adjustment Control Module J136/J521 ] Memory Seat/Steering Column Adjustment Control Module J136/J521.
