Left Flange Shaft Seal
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Thrust Piece (3305)
• Extractor Lever (T20143/2)
• Oil receptacle
• Sealing grease (G 052 128 A1)
Removing
• Transmission installed.
- Remove left front wheel.
- Remove the center noise insulation fasteners - 1 to 3 -.
- Remove left noise insulation - fasteners 1 to 3 -.
- Unbolt drive axle from transmission flange.
- If present, remove Left Front Level Control System Sensor (G78) - arrows -.
To loosen the collar bolt for the drive axle, the wheel bearing must not be loaded - the vehicle must not be sitting on its wheels.
- Have a 2nd technician depress the brake pedal.
- Remove the collar bolt - 2 - at the left drive axle.
- Remove left drive axle.
- Place oil receptacle underneath transmission.
- Remove bolt for left flange shaft, by screwing two bolts into the flange and counter-holding the flange shaft with a pry bar.
- Pull out the flange shaft.
- Pull out sealing ring for flange shaft using Extractor Lever (T20143/2).
Installing
- Lightly oil the outer circumference of the new seal.
- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip - arrow - halfway with Sealing Grease (G 052 128 A1).
- Drive in new seal to stop with Thrust Piece (3305) , do not distort while doing this.
- Press the flange shaft onto the transmission housing and tighten it. Tightening specification => [ (Item 12) Countersunk Bolt - 33 Nm ] Description and Operation.
The rest of the installation follows the reverse order of removal, note the following:
- Install left drive axle.
- Check gear oil level in manual transmission and fill. Refer to => [ Manual Transmission, Checking Gear Oil Level ] Service and Repair.
- If equipped, install Left Front Level Control System Sensor (G78) - arrows - and set headlamps to "Basic Setting" function.
