Steering Gear Overview, Generation I






1 Steering Gear Housing

2 Tie Rod

100 Nm

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Tie Rod ] Tie Rod.

3 Left Tie Rod End

Check dust caps for damage and correct seating.

4 Nut

55 Nm

Nut must be counter held on tie rod end using a wrench when loosening and tightening.

5 Spring Clamp

6 Boot

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Boot ] Boot.

Check for damage.

Must not be twisted after toe is adjusted.

7 Clamp

Always replace if removed.

Install a new clamp with locking pliers (VAS 6199).

8 Gasket

Between steering gear and vehicle interior.

9 Bolt

15 Nm

10 Cover

11 Gasket

Always replace if removed.

12 Steering Pinion with Steering Angle Sensor

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Steering Pinion with Steering Angle Sensor ] Steering Pinion With Steering Angle Sensor.

With steering torque sensor (G269).

13 Sensor Wire

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Sensor Wire ] Sensor Wire.

Electrical connection between the sensor and servo motor with control module.

14 Right Tie Rod End

Check dust caps for damage and correct seating.

15 Bolt

35 Nm

16 Clamp with Nuts

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Rubber Bushing ] Rubber Bushing.

Always replace if removed.

17 Rubber Bushing

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Rubber Bushing ] Rubber Bushing.

18 Bracket

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Rubber Bushing ] Rubber Bushing.

19 Seal

Always replace if removed.

20 Servo Motor with Control Module

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Servomotor with Control Module ] Servomotor With Control Module.

With power steering control module (J500).

With electromechanical power steering motor (V187).

With Engine Speed (RPM) sensor (G577).

Can be tested in "Guided Fault Finding" using the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051B).

21 Clip

22 Contact Foil

Not an individual component, is installed on the thrust piece.

Coat with supplied grease (G 052 192 A1) on contact side facing steering rack.

23 Hydraulic Thrust Piece

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Hydraulic Thrust Piece ] Hydraulic Thrust Piece.

24 Seal

Installed on the hydraulic thrust piece.

25 Seal

Insert into steering gear housing between thrust piece and adjustment screw.

26 Adjustment Bolt

For the hydraulic thrust piece.

Always replace if removed.

27 Rubber Plug

28 Adjustment Bolt

For the mechanical thrust piece.

Always replace if removed.

29 Spring

30 Seal

Installed on mechanical thrust piece.

31 Mechanical Thrust Piece

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Thrust Piece, Steering Pinion Side ] Thrust Piece, Steering Pinion Side.

32 Contact Foil

Not an individual component, is installed on the thrust piece.

Coat with supplied grease (G 052 192 A1) on contact side facing steering rack.

33 Nut

25 Nm

Always replace if removed.

34 Screw Plug

65 Nm

Fill with grease (G 052 192 A1) before installing.

Coat thread with LOCTITE(R) (5910).
