Hydraulic Thrust Piece
• Currently it is not possible to perform this repair.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Bracket (VW 540/2)
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1332)
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Thrust piece (3253/6) qty. 2
• Wet and dry vacuum cleaner for example (V.A.G 1373)
• Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051B)
• Drill
• 4 mm drill bit
Removing
- Remove steering gear. Refer to => [ Steering Gear ] Steering Gear.
- Clean steering gear in area of adjustment screw.
- Clamp the steering gear as illustrated.

- Drill the 6 peenings out using a 4 mm drill bit until reaching dimension - a -.
Dimension - a - = 3 mm
Do not drill deeper than 3 mm.
- Vacuum up drill shavings completely from steering gear housing using for example (V.A.G 1373).
- Remove the adjustment screw.
- Remove sealing ring - arrow -.
- Remove the hydraulic thrust piece from the steering gear housing.
• Replace the steering gear if there is corrosion, damage or wear on the steering rack.
Installing and Adjusting
- Coat the new thrust piece - arrow - (contact surface to rack), gasket and hole in the steering gear housing - arrow - with the grease (G 052 192 A1) provided.
• Do not use other grease under any circumstances.
- Install the hydraulic pressure piece and gasket - arrow -.
- Tighten new adjustment screw to 40 Nm.
- Peen the adjustment screw 6 times - arrows - using a punch.
• Punch points must be applied 2 graduation lines next to the drill out punch points.
- Mark one adjustment screw graduation line with the steering gear housing.
- Loosen the adjusting screw 5.5 graduation lines to the left.
- Install the adjusting screw 2.5 graduation lines to the right.
• While rotating the adjusting screw, resistance must be felt.
- Installing steering gear. Refer to => [ Steering Gear ] Steering Gear.
After installing, perform a steering angle sensor (G85) basic setting with the (VAS 5051B).
- Perform basic setting.
- Perform vehicle alignment. Refer to => [ Wheel Alignment ] Wheel Alignment.
