Driver or Front Passenger Side Airbag Igniter

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Seat Repair Stand (VAS6136)

Removing


Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components.

Follow the additional safety precautions when working with the side airbag. Refer to=> [ Side Airbag Safety Precautions ] Side Airbag Safety Precautions.

Follow all regulations when disposing of pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storage, Transporting and Disposal ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storage, Transporting and Disposal.

- Remove the front seat:

Standard seat and Sport seat (manually adjustable) as well as front folding seat - passenger seat, refer to => [ Manual Standard Front Seat ] Manual Standard Front Seat.

Standard seat, Sport seat (power) and Comfort seat, refer to => [ Power Standard Front Seat ] Power Standard Front Seat.

- Attach the front seat to the (VAS 6136). Refer to => [ Front Seat, Installing on Seat Repair Stand ] Overhaul.

- Remove the front seat backrest. Refer to => [ Front Seat Backrest ] Front Seat Backrest.

- Remove the padding from the front backrest until the side airbag bolt - 7 - is accessible. Refer to => [ Backrest Cover and Cushion ] Backrest Cover and Cushion; to do this carefully pull off the cover - 2 - and the padding - 3 - in the area around the side airbag.






- Remove the bolt - 7 -.

- Release the side airbag - 6 - and the hook - 5 - from the backrest frame - 4 - and leave it in the pocket sewn into the cover - 1 -.

- Remove the cover and padding form the seat backrest. Refer to=> [ Backrest Cover and Cushion ] Backrest Cover and Cushion and remove the side airbag.

Installation


Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components.

Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, connecting electrical connector), the person handling them must discharge static electricity. For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

Installation is reverse of removal, but note the following:

Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure.

- The threaded bolt hole - 7 - must be cleaned (for example, using a thread tap).






- Replace the bolt each time it are removed.


Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.

- Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on.

If the airbag indicator lamp (K75) indicates a fault after installation, the DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again using the Vehicle diagnostic tester.
