Selector Lever Cable
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Pry Lever - Rmv Outside Mirror (80 - 200)
Removing
- Place selector lever in position "P".
- Remove the bolts - 1 through 6 - and remove the front floor panel crossmember, if equipped.
- Remove the bolts - 1, 3 and 4 - and remove the selector lever cable heat shield - A -, if equipped.
• Bolt - 3 - attaches the heat shield, an exhaust system bracket and a mounting bracket to the transmission.
- Remove the bolts - 1 through 4 - and remove the rear floor panel crossmember, if equipped.
- Audi A4 Cabriolet: remove the rear diagonal braces - 5 - and - 6 -.
- Disconnect the exhaust system starting at the clamping sleeve(s) - arrows -.
• A second technician is needed to remove the rear section of the exhaust system.
- Disengage rear part of exhaust system at retaining loops and remove.
- Remove the driveshaft heat shield - arrows -.
- Remove the driveshaft - 1 - from the transmission. Refer to and lay it on the heat shield - 2 -.
- Remove vehicle floor plates at inside left - 3 - and inside right - 1 -, if necessary.
- Remove exhaust system heat shield - 2 -.
- Remove selector lever cable bracket - arrow -.
- Remove left front wheel.
- 2.5L TDI engine: remove the noise insulation for the left driveshaft from the wheel housing - arrows -.
- Removing left transmission support => [ Left and Right Transmission Supports ] 01V,01VA Transmission.
- Pry selector lever cable from selector shaft lever using Pry Lever - Rmv Outside Mirror (80 - 200) - arrow -.
- Remove the selector lever cable boot from the cover under the selector mechanism and push it to the rear.
- Remove lower cover from shift mechanism - arrows -.
- Remove retaining clip - 1 - for selector lever cable on shift mechanism downward.
- Pull plastic securing spring - 2 - slightly to front and push pin - 3 - upward only as far as necessary - arrow -.
- Remove the selector lever cable - 4 - from the selector mechanism at the same time.
• Make sure that pin is not pushed fully out.
• Take care not to bend or kink selector lever cable.
Installing
- Install new securing clasp - 1 - for selector lever cable to shift mechanism.
• Installation position: The angled end of the securing clasp faces toward the inside of the shift mechanism.
- Insert the end of the selector lever cable - 4 - into the joint of the selector lever.
- Press pin - 3 - downward - arrow -.
- Check whether plastic securing spring - 2 - has locked the pin.
- Bolt lower cover securely to shift mechanism - arrows -.
- Attach the selector lever cable boot into the lower cover under the selector mechanism.
- Move the selector lever from "P" to "S".
• Shift mechanism and selector lever cable must move freely. If necessary, replace selector lever cable or service shift mechanism.
• Take care not to bend or kink selector lever cable.
- Place selector lever in position "P".
- Press the selector shaft lever - 2 - on transmission completely toward rear in direction of - arrow - until parking lock engages.
• When parking lock is engaged, it must not be possible to turn both front wheels in one direction at the same time.
- Make sure that selector lever cable - 1 - has been routed free of kinks and tension.
- Push the selector lever cable ball head onto the selector shaft lever - 2 - with pliers.
• Do not bend selector shaft lever when pressing on, otherwise shift mechanism can no longer be adjusted exactly.
- Tighten the selector lever cable bracket in this position - arrow -.
Further installation is in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
- Install left transmission support with transmission mount. Refer to => [ Left and Right Transmission Supports ] 01V,01VA Transmission.
- Adjust selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Checking and Adjusting ] 01V,01VA Transmission.
- Install the selector lever cable heat shield. Refer to => [ Heat Shield Over the Selector Lever Cable ] Selector Lever Cable and Locking Cable Assembly Overview.
- Attach the driveshaft to the transmission.
- Reconnect exhaust system and ensure it is not under stress.
- Audi A4 Cabriolet: install the rear diagonal braces.
- Mount the left front wheel.
