Rear Flange Shaft Seal

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Thrust Plate (VW 401)

Thrust Plate (VW 402)

Thrust Pad (VW 447 i)

Punch (VW 409)

Pressure Application Device (T10136)

Removing

- Remove self-locking center differential cover. Refer to => [ Self-Locking Center Differential Cover ] Self-Locking Center Differential Cover.

- Remove the circlip - arrow - on the inside of the cover.





The circlip secures the flange shaft to the bearing in the cover.

- Press flange shaft out of self-locking center differential cover using (VW 409).





Position the cover on the (VW 401) and (VW 402).

Hold the flange shaft - A - with one hand to prevent it from falling down.

- Remove flange shaft.





Place a pry bar - A - underneath to prevent damaging the housing.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal.

Installing shaft seal:

The two-piece (T10136) is used to install the shaft seal.

- Place self-locking center differential cover - A - on thrust plate of the (T10136).





The pin in the middle of the tool is centered and faces upward into the cover. It serves as a guide and stop for thrust piece (T10136/1).

- Coat outer edge of shaft seal with axle oil.

- Slide new shaft seal onto (T10136/1).





Installed position: Open side of shaft seal faces cover.

- Place (T10136/1) with shaft seal into cover from above.

The pin of the thrust piece of the (T10136) serves as a guide from below and also as a stop for (T10136/1).

- Drive in new shaft seal as far as stop without tilting it.

- Fill the space between the sealing and dust lip half way with sealing grease (G 052 128 A1).

Install the rear flange shaft:

- Press flange shaft into self-locking center differential cover using (VW 409) and (VW 447 i).





Position the cover on the (VW 401) and (VW 402).

Install the flange shaft just far enough until it is possible to install the locking ring.

- Install the locking ring - arrow - into the groove in the flange shaft.





- Remove self-locking center differential cover. Refer to => [ Self-Locking Center Differential Cover ] Self-Locking Center Differential Cover.

- Transfer case gear oil, filling after repair. Refer to => [ Transfer Case, Transmissions with Separate Oil Systems, Filling after Repair ] Transfer Case, Transmissions With Separate Oil Systems, Filling After Repair
