DTC 86: F-CAN Communication
NOTE: Troubleshoot fuel and emissions DTC's first.
1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), or press the engine start/stop button to select the ON mode.
2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
3. Start and run the engine for at least 5 seconds.
4. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC 86 indicated?
YES - Go to step 5.
NO - Check the COMMU FI ECU, COMMU A/T, COMMU GAUGE, COMMU YAW RATE/G, COMMU STEERING ANGLE S (With SH-AWD), and COMMU 4WD (With SH-AWD) in the VSA FREEZE DATA with the HDS. Then check for F-CAN communication lines continuity to the appropriate system or sensor and loose terminals in the appropriate system or sensor connectors.
5. Check the COMMU FI ECU, COMMU A/T, COMMU GAUGE, COMMU YAW RATE/G, COMMU STEERING ANGLES (With SH-AWD), and COMMU 4WD (With SH-AWD) in the VSA DATA LIST with the HDS.
Is there a communication error in the system or sensor?
YES - Go to step 6.
NO - Go to step 15.
6. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode.
7. Short the SCS line with the HDS.
8. Disconnect PCM connector A (49P).
9. Disconnect the VSA modulator-control unit 47P connector. Service and Repair
10. Disconnect the gauge control module 32P connector.
11. Disconnect the yaw rate-lateral acceleration sensor 4P connector, VSA System Yaw Rate-Lateral Acceleration Sensor Replacement or the yaw rate-lateral/longitudinal acceleration sensor 4P connector. VSA System Yaw Rate-Lateral/Longitudinal Acceleration Sensor Replacement
12. With SH-AWD: Disconnect the steering angle sensor 5P connector. Service and Repair
13. With SH-AWD: Disconnect SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P).
14. Check the F-CAN communication lines for continuity between the VSA modulator-control unit and the appropriate system or sensor (see table).
Do the F-CAN communication lines have continuity?
YES - Go to step 15.
NO - Repair open in the appropriate wire.
With SH-AWD:
With SH-AWD:
15. Check for loose terminals in the appropriate system or sensor connectors.
Are the appropriate system or sensor connectors OK?
YES - Go to step 16.
NO - Repair or reconnect the connector securely.
16. Check for other system or sensor DTCs with the HDS.
Is another DTC indicated?
YES - Do the appropriate DTC troubleshooting.
NO - Go to step 17.
17. Update the VSA modulator-control unit if it does not have the latest software. Testing and Inspection If the unit already has the latest software, substitute a known-good VSA modulator-control unit. Service and Repair
18. Start and run the engine for at least 5 seconds.
19. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC 86 indicated?
YES - Check for loose terminals in the VSA modulator-control unit 47P connector. If the VSA modulator-control unit was updated, substitute a known-good VSA modulator-control unit, Service and Repair then retest. If the VSA modulator-control unit was substituted, go to step 1.
NO - If the VSA modulator-control unit was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the VSA modulator-control unit was substituted, replace the original VSA modulator-control unit. Service and Repair If any other DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting.
