Steering Column: Service and Repair






Steering column

Note! The illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models. Some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.

Preparatory work

Removing soundproofing panels
Check that the wheels are in the straight ahead position.
Ignition key in position 0.

Note! Do not remove the ignition key, otherwise the ignition switch is activated.

Remove the soundproofing panel. See: Instrument panel lower Instrument Panel Lower.

Removing the knee bolster





Note! Only applies to vehicles with knee bolsters.

Remove:
- the 4 screws
- the knee bolster
- the air duct.

Removing the cable harness, Steering wheel module (SWM)





Remove:
- the steering wheel module (SWM). See: Steering wheel control module Service and Repair.
- the connector from the ignition switch and the cable harness from the steering column.

Removal

Removing the steering shaft joint from the steering gear





Note! Check that the steering wheel adjustment lever is released when the joint is removed from the steering gear.

Note! The position of the front wheels must not change.

Remove the screw.
Lift up the steering shaft joint so that it releases from the steering gear.

Removing the steering column / steering shaft




Remove the 4 screws for the steering column.

Note! On vehicles with pyrotechnics in the steering column: take care when removing the screws.

Angle the steering column. See: Removing the ignition cable to prevent stretching the ignition cable and damaging the connector.
On vehicles without ignition cables, remove the steering column.

Removing the ignition cable





Note! Only applies to vehicles with pyrotechnics in the steering column.

Detach the cable connector from the steering column.
Carefully press on the connector's black lugs
Use pliers as illustrated.
Remove the steering column.

Installation

Note! For tightening torques, see: Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications.

Transferring components




Transfer the steering wheel lock to the new steering column. See Steering lock Service and Repair.

Installing the steering column





Note! Only applies to vehicles with pyrotechnics in the steering column.

Position the steering column so that the cable is not stretched, install the connector.





Note! The replacement part screws are of different lengths. The two shorter screws must be positioned innermost in the steering column against the firewall.

Install:
- the steering column, ensure to align the guide lugs.
- the 4 M8 screws, use new screws. Tighten alternately.

Installing the steering wheel shaft joint





Note! Check that the steering wheel adjustment is loose when the joint is removed from the steering gear.

Install the joint, use a new screw, 1 x M8. Tighten.

Installing the cable harness, steering wheel module (SWM)





Install:
- the cable harness for the ignition switch and the steering column
- the steering wheel module (SWM). See: Steering wheel control module Service and Repair.

Finishing

Installing the soundproofing panel

Note! Only applies to vehicles with knee bolsters.

Install:
- the air duct
- the knee bolster
- the 4 x screws for the knee bolster
- the soundproofing panel. See: Instrument panel lower Instrument Panel Lower
