Parking Brake System: Adjustments
Parking brake, adjusting
Note! The illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models. Some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.
Applying the parking brake
Note! It is very important to apply the parking brake to prevent seizing in the system
Apply the parking brake very hard five times.
Exposing adjusting nut
Loosen the lever's gaiter so that the adjusting nut is exposed.
Loosen the adjusting nut until the adjusting screw's end is even with the nut and apply the parking brake by pulling hard on the lever five times.
Make sure that the parking brake's lever is in resting position.
Adjusting the brake caliper
The brakes shall not be warmer than that they can be touched.
Lift up the car so that the rear wheels can rotate freely.
Check that the parking brake's lever is in resting position.
Press five times on the brake pedal, so that the automatic adjustment in the brake caliper is activated.
Checking friction
Rotate the rear wheels to check that there is no abnormal friction.
Note! Always rotate one wheel at a time
Note! On 4-wheel drive vehicles there is friction in the drivetrain which is completely normal. That's why it is very important that this friction is considered when adjustment is performed.
Note! Friction may vary slightly between left and right side.
Adjusting parking brake wire
First tighten the wire's adjusting nut until 7 mm of the screw's end protrudes from the nut.
Then tighten the adjustment's nut until light friction is obtained in the parking brake with the lever in resting position.
Note! For earlier version cars with adjusting nut M6 it may be necessary to adjust the nut downward slightly more than the later version with M8 nut.
Adjust and pull the lever five times to at least five notches during the adjustment.
Check that the parking brake is lightly applied when the wheels are rotated and the lever is in resting position.
When light application position has been found on one of the wheels, screw back the adjusting nut one revolution and pull the parking brake's lever five times to at least five notches at every parking brake application.
Check with the parking brake's lever in resting position and that there is no friction from the parking brake by rotating the wheels.
If there is friction, loosen the nut more and apply the brake five times with the lever according to the above, check again.
Install the lever's gaiter.
