Condenser HVAC: Service and Repair
Condenser, replacing

Preparatory work
Draining refrigerant and removing components
Warning! Follow the safety instructions for work on air conditioning systems. See: Refrigerant, safety regulations Technician Safety Information.
Note! First read the instructions covering slow and fast leaks.
Note! Always plug the pipes and connections when working on the climate control system.
Drain the refrigerant from the system. See Refrigerant, draining Refrigerant, Draining.
Raise the vehicle.
Remove:
- the air guide under the radiator assembly with the 2 screws (1) and 2 catches (2)
- the bumper shell. See Bumper front, replacing Service and Repair.
For S60R
Remove the 1 hose clip and 2 screws. Then remove the auxiliary charge air cooler.
Removal
Removing the condenser
Remove:
- the right AC pipe connection with the 1 screw.
- the connector of the pressure sensor
- the pressure sensor
- the lower right mounting with the 1 screw.
Undo the left AC pipe from the clip.
Remove the lower left mounting with the 1 screw.
Loosen the left headlight slightly but let the cables remain. See Headlamp/bulb, replacing Headlamp/Bulb, Replacing.
Remove the left AC pipe with the 1 screw.
Remove the upper mountings on the condenser with the 2 screws.
The condenser is held in place by the left AC pipe.
Raise the vehicle.
Remove the condenser, moving it straight down. Press the AC pipe on the left side slightly to the side while pulling the condenser down.
Installation
Note! For tightening torques, see applicable specifications.
Installing the condenser
Fill the condenser with oil.
Note! Always use new O-rings lubricated with compressor oil.
Install the condenser with the 2 lower retaining screws (M6). Tighten.
Guide the left AC pipe into place against the condenser connection and fasten with the clip.
Install:
- the right AC pipe with the 1 M6 screw and tighten.
- the pressure sensor and tighten
- the connector.
For S60R
Install the auxiliary charge air cooler with the 2 M6 screws.
Applies to all vehicles.
Raise the vehicle.
Install:
- the condenser's 2 upper mountings (M6) and tighten
- the left AC pipe (1 M8) and tighten
- the left headlight. See Headlamp/bulb, replacing Headlamp/Bulb, Replacing.
Finishing
Filling refrigerant and checking for leaks
Vacuum pump the air conditioning (A/C) system. See: Vacuum pumping Vacuum Pumping.
Fill the system. See Refrigerant, filling Refrigerant, Filling.
Leak trace the system. See: Leak tracing, fluorescent tracing agent / UV lamp Leak Tracing, Fluorescent Tracing Agent / UV Lamp or: Leak tracing, electronic leak tracer Leak Tracing, Electronic Leak Tracer.
Installing the bumper shell and air guide
Install:
- the bumper shell. See Bumper front, replacing Service and Repair
- the air guide under the radiator assembly with the 2 catches and 2 screws.
