Final Drive






Final drive

Special tools:

Preparatory work

Preparations
Raise the vehicle. See: Jacking points body Locations.

Note! Make sure that the rear air baffle can be removed.

Remove:
- the rear wheels
- the propeller shaft from the flange. See: Propeller shaft Propeller Shaft
- the rear springs. See: Spring, AW50/51 AWD, M66 AWD Rear Suspension
- the rear drive shafts. See: Rear drive axle Rear Drive Axle.

Removal

Removing the lower mounting for the shock absorbers




Remove the shock absorber on both sides.

Removing the air baffle




Remove the air baffle on both sides.

Disconnecting the connector for the differential electronic module (DEM)




Disconnect the connector for the differential electronic module (DEM) on the right-hand side. Release the connector from the 1 clip.
Remove any auxiliary/extra cable harnesses from their holders on the sub-frame.

Removing the front mounting for the support arms





Remove the following on both sides:
- the connector for the ABS sensor (2). Disconnect the connector and the cable harness from the clips
- the 2 screws (1).

Removing the clips for the brake cable





Remove the following on both sides:
- the screw
- the 1 clip.
Unhook the exhaust system from the bushings in front of the rear axle.

Removing the sub-frame




Position 951 2951 Lifting equipment 951 2951 Lifting Equipment centrally under the sub-frame. Support with a spacer so that the contact surface is straight.
Raise the jack to light contact.
Remove the 3 screws on each side of the sub-frame.

Note! Make sure that no cables/hoses are trapped when lowering the sub-frame.

Lower the sub-frame approximately 5 cm.

Removing the screws from the bracket for the evaporative emission canister (EVAP canister)




Remove the screws for the bracket for the evaporative emission canister (EVAP canister).

Note! Only applies to USA.

Remove:
- the connector and clip on the bracket
- the brackets acc. to: Leak diagnostic pump Service and Repair.

Note! Make sure that no cables/hoses are trapped when lowering the sub-frame.

Lower the sub-frame.

Removing the final drive





Remove:
- the screws for the final drive
- the final drive.

Transferring components
When replacing the final drive, see: Final drive, transfer of components Procedures.

Installation

Note! For tightening torques, see Specifications. Tightening Torque

Installing the final drive




Install the 3 x M12 screws. Tighten.

Installing the bracket for the evaporative emission canister (EVAP canister)





Note! Make sure that no cables/hoses are trapped when installing the sub-frame.

Raise the sub-frame until approximately 5 cm remains.
Install the bracket to the evaporative emission canister (EVAP canister). Use 4 M6 screws. Tighten.

Note! Only applies to USA.

Install:
- the brackets. See: Leak diagnostic pump Service and Repair
- the connector and the clip on the bracket.

Installing the sub-frame





Note! Make sure that no cables/hoses are trapped when lowering the sub-frame.

Carefully lift the sub-frame.
Install the 3 screws on both sides. Tighten. See: Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications.
Remove the lifting table.

Installing the clips for the brake cable





Install on both sides:
- the screw
- the 1 clip.
Hook the exhaust system into place on the bushings in front of the rear axle.

Installing the front mounting for the support arms





Install on both sides:
- the 2 screws (1). Tighten. See: Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications
- the connector for the ABS sensor (2).

Connecting the connector for the differential electronic module (DEM)




Installing the clip and the connector for the differential electronic module (DEM) on the right hand side.
Install any auxiliary/extra cable harnesses in their holders on the sub-frame.

Installing the air baffle




Install the air baffle on both sides.

Installing the lower mounting for the shock absorber




Install the shock absorber on both sides.
Tighten, see: Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications.

Finishing

Finishing

Install:
- the rear drive shafts. See: Rear drive axle Rear Drive Axle.
- the rear springs. See: Spring, AW50/51 AWD, M66 AWD Rear Suspension
- the propeller shaft on the flange. See: Propeller shaft Propeller Shaft
- the rear wheels.
