Back Window Glass: Service and Repair
Rear windscreen
Note! The illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models. Some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.
Note! The procedure refers to two different Volvo adhesive kits. The products in the kits must not be mixed.
Removal
Preparatory work
Special tool: 951 2925, 998 6030
Place the adhesive in the oven (applies when using adhesive kit 1161820).
Remove:
- rear headlining as described in Headliner rear Headliner Rear
- the rubber seal in the rear edge of the roof panel.
Unplug the cables to the rear window.
Thread on both ends in the screwdriver.
Pull in both the wire ends for the sun visor.
Pull in the excess wire toward the right A-post.
Fasten a winch around the window. Fasten the long end of the wire in the winch.
Begin winching the wire in.
Warning! Use protective goggles.
Release the winch from the window. Pull out the lug (1) and move the winch.
Note! Hold the roll secure by hand so that the wire does not spin off. See illustration.
Keep an eye on the other end of the wire to ensure that it does not move.
Secure the winch (2) and winch in the wire.
Winch in the wire and move the winch as illustrated.
Winch in the wire again and move the winch as illustrated.
Lift out the window.
Installation
Installing the rear window
Note! When bonding windshields, only Volvo's aftermarket adhesive is approved. This adhesive is continually tested to satisfy Volvo's demands on the vehicle in the aftermarket environment.
Note! See Service and Repair
Note! Check that the adhesive bead properly adheres.
Cut off any adhesive residue.
Clean with isopropanol, part number 116 1721.
Clean the new window with isopropanol, part number 116 1721.
Note! When using adhesive kit 1161693, see Bonded window general, information Service and Repair
Then continue with "Install".
When using adhesive kit 1161820.
Apply activator to existing adhesive beads, wipe dry.
Apply activator to the window. Wipe dry.
Apply adhesive.
The adhesive bead must be 6 mm wide 12 mm high.
Install the windshield.
Installing components
Connect the cables to the window.
Install:
- rear headlining as described in Headliner rear Headliner Rear
- the rubber seal in the rear edge of the roof panel.
Note! Park the car on a level surface. The adhesive must harden for 3 hours at a temperature of at least +5°C (41°F). Otherwise, extra heat must be applied.
