Preparatory work

Removing wheels

Remove:
- the front wheel
- the splashguard under the engine.

Removal

Removing components
Remove the 1 screw for the wheel hub / drive shaft.
Tap the end of the drive shaft approximately 15-20 mm into the wheel hub.
Detach the brake hose from its mounting lug in the spring strut. Detach the ABS line from its mounting lug in the wheel arch. Slacken off the nut for the ball joint for the control arm.

Note! Before removing the nut from the ball joint, clean the exposed threads of rust. Lubricate using rust solvent before removing the nut.

Make sure that the nut is at the same level as the end of the ball joint. Use: 951 2945 Puller 951 2945 Puller and remove the ball joint from the wheel spindle.

Removing the drive shaft from the wheel hub




Use: 999 7076 Lever 999 7076 Lever and unhook the control arm from the wheel spindle ball joint. Detach the drive shaft from the wheel hub.
Install: 999 5562 PROTECTIVE SOCKET 999 5562 Protective Socket on the ball joint. Hold the protective sleeve in place using the nut.

Removing the cover for the support bearing




Remove the bearing cap for the drive shaft.

Removing the drive shaft from the transmission




Fold back the spring strut. Pull the drive shaft straight out.

Caution! Do not pull the drive shaft. The axial pinions cannot support the large load.

Installation

Note! For tightening torques, see: Tightening Torque

Installing the drive shaft in the transmission




Install the drive shaft and bearing cap (use a new steel cap ) with screws, 2 x M8. Tighten.

Installing the drive shaft on the wheel hub
Lubricate the drive shaft splines for the wheel hub. Use a small amount of oil.
Hold down the control arm as when removing. Align the drive shaft in the hub. Remove the guard from the ball joint. Align the ball joint lug in the wheel spindle.

Install:
- a new lock nut on the ball joint
- a new screw for the drive shaft / wheel hub
- the brake hose to its mounting lug in the spring strut. Install the ABS line on the mounting lug in the wheel arch.

Finishing

Installing wheels
Install the splashguard under the engine.
