Rear Bumper: Service and Repair
Bumper rear, replacing
Note! The illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models. Some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.
Removal
Removing rear bumper
Remove:
- the rear floor hatch
- the front floor hatch
- the battery. See: Battery, replacing Battery, Replacing
- the center console locker or the subwoofer
- the screws (2), 1 on each side, in the upper edge of the side
- the screws (3), 1 per side
- the 4 clips on the underside of the casing.
Pull the sides of the casing out. Detach the casing at the top. Then pull the casing straight back.
Hint: This operation is easier with two people.
Remove the cable harness for the parking assistance sensors (if applicable). See: Parking assistance sensor rear, replacing Parking Assistance Sensor Rear, Replacing.
Remove the sound proofing (1) and the 4 nuts.
Hint: Use butyl tape to secure the nuts in the socket. Otherwise the nuts are easy to lose.
Disconnect the connector for the antenna. See: Antenna bumper rear, replacing Antenna Bumper Rear, Replacing.
Transferring components
Transferring components
Transfer:
- the cover over the towing eyelet
- the energy absorber (the foam/shock absorber). Press it off the rear section.
Replacing components
Replacing the parking assistance sensors
Replacing the parking assistance sensors. See: Parking assistance sensor rear, replacing Parking Assistance Sensor Rear, Replacing.
Replacing the antenna
Replace the antenna. See: Antenna bumper rear, replacing Antenna Bumper Rear, Replacing.
Replacing the rear mounting bracket
Remove the screws, 3 for each bracket.
Replacing side mounting brackets
Remove:
- the rivets, 4 per bracket.
- the screws, 5 per bracket.
Replacing trim strip
Unhook the 13 hooks on each trim strip. Use a weatherstrip tool.
Hint: Start at the front edge of the trim strip.
Replacing the bumper guard
Remove:
- the hooks at the top of the bumper guard
- the hooks at the bottom of the bumper guard. Use a weatherstrip tool.
Hint: The bumper guard can be removed without removing the bumper casing.
Replacing the rear bumper spoiler
Place the bumper cover on a soft surface.
Remove the spoiler from the bumper cover. Release the 28 catches on the inside. Then pull off the spoiler.
Replacing the weatherstrip
Removal
Pull off the weatherstrip.
Remove any tape residue.
Installation
Note! The weatherstrip will not be reused.
Note! Clean the surface for the weatherstrip using an appropriate cleaning agent. Then wipe dry using paper.
Install a new weatherstrip. Press it firmly into place along the entire surface.
Installation
Installing the rear bumper
Note! For tightening torques, see applicable specifications.
Install:
- the energy absorber (damper/foam) for the rear section
- the rail on the body. Use 4 x M8 nuts. Tighten.
Hint: Use butyl tape to secure the nuts in the socket. Otherwise the nuts are easy to lose.
Install:
- the 4 x sound proofing sections in the cargo compartment
- the 4 connectors for the parking assistance sensors.
Guide the hooks (6) for the bumper into the grooves (7) on the side bracket. Press in at the top and center so that the hooks engage.
Hint: This operation is easier with two people.
Install:
- the 4 clips on the underside of the casing
- the screws, 1 on each side.
Note! Do not use rivets during installation.
Install:
- the spring nuts, 1 on each side.
- the screws, 1 on each side. Tighten.
- the center console locker or the subwoofer
- the battery. See: Battery, replacing Battery, Replacing
- the front floor hatch
- the rear floor hatch.
