Adjusting the position of the steering wheel
Special tools:
998 8695 TEST DEVICE 998 8695 Test Device
Caution! Cars with DSTC systems. When working on the steering or wheel alignment, the adaptation of the steering wheel angle must be set to zero using the diagnostic tool. Test drive. Checking the steering wheel position
- Drive the car straight forward and check that the steering wheel is in the "straight ahead" position
- If the steering wheel position is incorrect adjust as follows.
Adjusting the steering wheel position
Remove the steering wheel
- Remove the driver's airbag module. See Airbag driver and passenger (SRS), replacing Airbag Driver and Passenger (SRS), Replacing.
- Remove the locking screw from the ""parking hole"" in the steering wheel. Install the screw in the contact reel.
- Remove the steering wheel screw
- Ensure that the front wheels and steering wheel are in the straight-ahead position
- Remove the steering wheel.
Note! Take care to ensure that the connector does not catch on the steering wheel during removal.
Zero the contact reel
Zero the contact reel. See Contact reel driver airbag module, resetting Adjustments.
Install the steering wheel and check the steering wheel position
Note! Ensure that front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
- Pull the connectors from the contact reel through the steering wheel
- Install the steering wheel carefully so that both catches on the contact reel are seated in the two recesses in the steering wheel hub
- Install the steering wheel screw. Use anew screw. Finger tighten.
Caution! Do not turn the steering wheel when it is on the steering shaft. Since the contact reel is locked, it will be damaged beyond repair if the wheel is turned in this situation.
- Remove the locking screw holding the contact reel. Install the contact reel in the parking hole in the steering wheel
- Connect tool998 8695 TEST DEVICE 998 8695 Test Device to the contact reel cable
- Drive the car straight forward and check that the steering wheel is in the "straight ahead" position
- If the steering wheel position is incorrect repeat the adjustment.
Tighten the screw in the center of the steering wheel
- Remove tool 998 8695
- Tighten the screw in the center of the steering wheel. Tighten to 35 Nm
- Check that the SRS light is extinguished, i.e. that no DTCs are present.
Install the steering wheel module
- Turn the ignition key to position I to unlock the steering wheel
- Position the lower section of the steering wheel module against the steering wheel
- Connect the connector
- Fold in the steering wheel module. Ensure that wiring lies free and is not trapped
- Secure the steering wheel module with the Torx screws from the side
- Tighten the steering wheel module screws. Tighten to 10 Nm.
Check the function
Ensure that the steering wheel turns easily and that the steering lock functions.
Check that no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) have been stored while the repair was carried out.
