Airbag module seat (SIPS), replacing

Preparatory work
Removing the battery lead and important information
Lean the backrest on the seat forwards. Applies only to power seats.
Remove the battery lead. See Battery, disconnecting Battery Disconnecting.
To prevent electric static discharge problems:
When removing a seat with a seat airbag module (SIPS) from the vehicle, the seat must be grounded. This is due to the danger of static electricity.
Detach the chair from its screwed joint. Do not lift the seat out of the vehicle yet.
Strip a long cable at both ends. Secure one end to the rear mounting on the chair. Secure the other end in the vehicle or in the car hoist.
Removal
Removing seat airbag modules (SIPS)
Remove the seat from the vehicle. See Lifting the front seats in and out .
Release the tension in the lumbar support.
Remove the lumbar support adjustment knob. First unscrew the knob counter-clockwise as far as it will go. Continue screwing counter-clockwise and pull out hard.
Remove:
- the side piece by pulling it straight out
- the backrest adjustment knob. Pull the knob straight out. This applies only to manual seats
- the 5 half moon clips from the bottom of the backrest.
Remove the upholstery up to the first lateral channel. There are 2 half moon clips on each front-rear channel.
Remove 3 half moon clips from the first lateral channel.
Remove another half moon clip from each side of the front-rear channels up to the upper front-rear channel.
Remove the 2 elastic attachments on the inside/reverse of the backrest.
Pull up the backrest upholstery.
Bend out and expose the protective pad on the side where the airbag is located.
Remove the 2 screws holding the airbag to the inside of the backrest frame.
Pull the airbag downwards. Fold the airbag slightly forward.
Remove the airbag.
Cut the tie strap.
Cut off the 2 tie straps.
Release the cable harness.
Replace the airbag.
Installation
Installing seat airbag modules (SIPS)
Install the cable harness as illustrated.
Ensure that there is sufficient slack in the cable harness between the ignition cable connector and the first tie strap (1).
Alternative 1 (vehicles without protective sheath on the ignition cable)
Install the other tie strap approximately 40 mm below the black mark (2) on the ignition cable.
Alternative 2 (vehicles with protective sheath on the ignition cable)
Install the second tie strap at the light mark (1) on the protective sheath.
Install:
- the third tie strap under the seat cushion
- the airbag
- the 2 M5 screws. Tighten to 6 Nm
- the protective pad
- the 2 elastic attachments on the inside/reverse of the backrest.
Pull down the backrest cushion upholstery so that the half moon clips can be installed.
Install:
- the half moon clips, one on each side, in the front-rear channel down to the first lateral channel
- 3 half moon clips in the lateral channel
- 2 half moon clips per front-rear channel down to the base of the backrest
- 5 half moon clips in the underside of the backrest
- the backrest adjustment knob. Press the backrest adjustment knob straight in. This applies only to manual seats
- the side piece by pressing it straight in
- the lumbar support adjustment knob. Press the lumbar support adjustment knob in and screw into position.
Reinstall the seat in the car. See Lifting the front seats in and out .
Re-tension the lumbar support.
