Rear Bumper: Service and Repair






Bumper rear, replacing

Note! The illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models. Some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.

Removal

Removing rear bumper





Remove:
- the floor hatch
- the battery. See: Battery, replacing Battery, Replacing
- the cover and the soundproofing on the right-hand side
- the sub-woofer if applicable.
Fold the soundproofing up where it covers the 4 holes (1).
Remove the 4 nuts.

Hint: Use butyl tape to secure the nuts in the sleeve. Otherwise the nuts are easy to lose.





Remove:
- the connector from the antenna amplifier (2). Alternatively remove the screw (3)
- the bracket.





Remove:
- the clips (4), 1 on each side, at the bottom of the casing
- the screws (5), 1 on each side, at the bottom of the casing
- the 4 clips on the underside of the casing.

Hint: The clips hold the bumper cover and rear section together. They can be released later.




Pull the bumper backwards while pulling both the sides outwards so that the edges release from the side bracket.

Hint: This operation is easier with two people.

Transferring components

Transferring components

Transfer:
- the cover over the towing eyelet
- the energy absorber (the foam/shock absorber). Press it off the rear section
- weatherstrip Pull it off.




Transfer the 2 weatherstrips. Use a weatherstrip tool.

Replacing components

Replacing the parking assistance sensors

Replacing the antenna
Replace the antenna. See: Antenna bumper rear, replacing Service and Repair.

Replacing side mounting brackets





Remove:
- the rivets, 4 per bracket.




- the screws, 5 per bracket.

Replacing the rear mounting bracket





Remove:
- the screws, 3 per bracket.

Replacing the rear bumper spoiler





Hint: The bumper does not need to be unscrewed from the vehicle for the spoiler to be removed.

Remove the cover for the towing eye.

Remove:
- the clips (4), 1 on each side, at the bottom of the casing
- the 4 clips on the underside of the casing.
Pull the sides of the spoiler out. Then pull the whole cover backwards.

Installation

Installing the rear bumper

Note! For tightening torques, see applicable specifications.




Guide the hooks (6) for the bumper into the grooves (7) on the side bracket. Press firmly at the top so that the hooks engage.

Hint: This operation is easier with two people.

Install:
- the screws, 1 on each side, at the bottom of the casing
- the 4 clips on the underside of the casing
- the 4 M8 nuts. Tighten.

Hint: Use butyl tape to secure the nuts in the sleeve. Otherwise the nuts are easy to lose.





Install:
- the screw (x 1). Tighten
- the connector for the antenna amplifier. Alternatively the screw for the bracket
- the soundproofing
- the sub-woofer if applicable
- the cover and the soundproofing on the right-hand side
- the battery. See: Battery, replacing Battery, Replacing
- the floor hatch.
