Seat belts, replacing
Front seat belt
Preparations
Disconnect the battery lead.
See Battery, disconnecting Battery Disconnecting.
Removing seat belts from the front seats
See Airbag driver and passenger (SRS), replacing Service and Repair.
Remove:
- the B-post panel. See.
Remove:
- the connector. See Igniter wire connector Igniter Wire Connector
- the 2 screws (48 Nm).
the seat belt (inertia) reel and the seat belt tensioner by pulling the unit straight upwards. Leave the clips and fixture in place.
Installing seat belts for the front seats
See Preparations.
Install in reverse order. See Removing seat belts from the front seats.
Then check the seat belt function. See Checking the function of the seatbelt.
Replacing seat belts after a collision
Preparations
Disconnect the battery lead.

Removal
Warning! The ignition must not be switched on when the SRS ignition cable connector is being removed or installed.
Warning! Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected non-deployed seat belt tensioner. This could deploy it.
Warning! After a collision, the seat belt (inertia) reels and tensioners must always be replaced. This applies even if no one was seated in the passenger seat at the time of the collision.
Warning! Seat belt tensioners must never be unscrewed, repaired or moved to another vehicle. For information about what to do with used seat belt tensioners, see Handling non-deployed SRS-components Discarding Pyrotechnic Components.
Remove:
For front seats see Removing seat belts from the front seats.
For rear seats see S80).
Checking the seat belt tensioner
Check
Insert a wire in the pipe on the seat belt tensioner as illustrated.
Check the position of the piston in the seat belt tensioner.
Piston position A:
The seat belt tensioner has deployed. Replace both the seat belt (inertia) reels and the seat belt tensioners. See Front seat belt.
Piston position B:
The seat belt tensioner has not deployed.
No action is required
Note! If any airbag has deployed, all seat belts and tensioners must be replaced.
Front seat belt buckle
Preparations
Disconnect the battery lead.
See Battery, disconnecting Battery Disconnecting.
Removal
Remove the seat from the car. See Lifting the front seats in and out Removal and Replacement.
Remove the seat belt buckle. See Seat belt buckle Seat Belt Buckle.
Installation
Install:
- a screw in the seat belt buckle. See Seat belt buckle Seat Belt Buckle
- the seat in the car. See Lifting the front seats in and out Removal and Replacement.
Checking the function of the seatbelt
Check seat belt function
Check that the seat belt (inertia) reel inhibits seat belt movement correctly. Pull and jerk the belt repeatedly to check the function.
Warning! The ignition must never, under any circumstances, be switched on when the connector for the SRS ignition cable is being removed or installed.
Ignition in position II. Connect the battery negative lead.
Note! Check that the SRS indicator lamp is not defective by turning the key to position II. The SRS indicator lamp must light and go out after approximately 7 seconds.
Check that the SRS indicator lamp in the combined instrument panel is not constantly lit. Fault-trace the SRS system if the lamp is constantly lit.
Rear seat belts
Preparations
Disconnect the battery lead.

Removing the rear seat seat belts (S60, S80)
Remove:
- the rear seat cushion. See Rear seat assembly Rear Seat Assembly
- the parcel shelf. See Parcel shelf Parcel Shelf
- the connector. See Igniter wire connector Igniter Wire Connector
- one nut for the seat belt (inertia) reel (48 Nm)
- one screw for the end mounting (48 Nm).
Replace the seat belt (inertia) reel and tensioner.
Removing rear seat seat belts (V70)
Remove:
- the rear seat cushion. See Cushion Cushion
- the backrest. See The backrest Backrest
- the connector. See Igniter wire connector Igniter Wire Connector
- 1 nut for the seat belt (inertia) reel (48 Nm)
- 1 screw for the end mounting (48 Nm).
Replace the seat belt (inertia) reel and tensioner.
Hint: If the seat belt (inertia) reel is replaced when fault-tracing, it is easier to do when the side cushion is removed and the connector separated.
Rear seat belt buckle (S60, S80)
Remove the rear seat cushion. See Cushion Cushion.
Remove the side cushion. See.
Remove 1 screw from the seat belt buckle (48 Nm).
Rear seat belt buckle (V70)
Remove the rear seat cushion. See Cushion Cushion.
Remove the side cushion. See Side cushion Side Cushion.
Remove 1 screw from the seat belt buckle (48 Nm).
Installation
Warning! The ignition must never, under any circumstances, be switched on when the connector for the SRS ignition cable is being removed or installed
Install in reverse order. See Rear seat belts.
Installation
Front seat belt
Install in reverse order. See Installing seat belts for the front seats.
Rear seat belts
Note! Ensure that the guide for the end mounting is correctly positioned during installation. (The end mounting must be pointing forwards at an angle of 45°).
Install in reverse order. See S80) for S60 and S80. See Removing rear seat seat belts (V70) for the V70.
Front seat belt buckle
Install in reverse order. See Installation.
Rear seat belt buckle
