Brake pad, replacing

Note! As the illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and / or models, some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.

Note! Place paper under the master cylinder and on the filler cap to avoid brake fluid spillage.

Remove the wheels on both sides.

Note! The brake calipers are painted. Be careful when working on the brakes.

Removal

Removing the brake pads





Note! Do not depress the brake pedal while the brake pads are removed.

Remove:
- lock pins
- damping spring
- brake pads.

Cleaning brake calipers





Note! Clean and check the brake pad mating surfaces in the brake caliper and caliper holder (see the arrows).

Check the brake caliper and the piston's dust protection.

Note! If the dust boot is damaged dirt may have penetrated the cylinder. The brake caliper must be replaced.

Checking the brake disc
Check the brake disc's friction surface.
If the brake disc shows signs of warping, check lateral warp (run-out) according to Brake disc front, calibrating Brake Disc Front, Calibrating.

Disc thickness, front
Minimum disc thickness/replacement limit = 30.0mm. The minimum recommended disc thickness when installing new brake pads = 30.8mm.

Disc thickness, rear
Minimum disc thickness/replacement limit = 26.0mm. The minimum recommended disc thickness when installing new brake pads = 26.7mm.

Installing brake pads

Only front brakes




Press back the pistons in the brake caliper with a large screwdriver.

Note! The brake pads are marked with an arrow on the reverse which must point downwards.

Grease the brake pad mating surfaces towards the brake caliper using silicone grease, part no. 1161687 (12 ml) or part no. 1161688 (50 ml)

Install:
- brake pads.
- the shims on the back of the brake pad
- damping spring
- lock pins.

Note! Shims shall not be installed on vehicles with vibration damper or on vehicles from and incl. chassis number V70 500817-, S60 466813-.

Only rear brakes




Press back the pistons in the brake caliper with a large screwdriver.
Brush on copper paste from the service kit on the brake pad's contact surfaces against the brake caliper.





Note! The backing paper must be left in place on the S60 up to chassis number 2349962 and on V70 up to and incl. chassis number 2380621. The backing paper must be ripped off for higher chassis numbers.

Install:
- brake pads.
- damping spring
- lock pins.

Install the wheels. See Installing wheels Service and Repair.

Note! Depress the brake pedal several times. Check the brake fluid level.

Remove the paper from the master cylinder.
